Although the land was surveyed and platted in 1724, the first known settlers didn’t arrive till the 1730s. One of the land buyers was Susanna Beatty, who was a widower. This was unique because, in those days, women did not own properties, generally. A church, the Glade Reformed Congregation, was built in the mid-1700s and is still going today. The original church, which was a log structure, is also still in use for the Congregation’s functions. The town of Walkersville formed when Isaac Walker purchased land from his father in 1831 and created the plans for the development of a town. Adjacent to a major route between Frederick and Gettysburg, PA, the town quickly grew thanks to a steady flow of travelers.

Several historic structures and landmarks are still standing today, including the Harris Farm, which is one of the original 18th-century farms. The Crum Road Bridge, while not a coveted covered bridge, was built in 1875 using an unusual iron bowstring pony bridge design. Too narrow for a modern automobile, it’s currently used as a pedestrian bridge at the Heritage Farm Park. Though Walkersville is still a farming community, it’s mainly a bedroom community for the nearby larger towns, such as Frederick, MD, and Washington, DC. When you rent an RV in Walkersville, MD, it makes it extremely easy to explore the central Maryland countryside.

Discover Walkersville

The Great Outdoors

An RV rental in Walkersville is a smart choice. Those with an RV gain access to a whole world of adventure, nature, and pristine wilderness. A few miles west of Frederick, an array of parks lines up like pearls on a necklace, following the South Mountain ridge. All combined, there are over 100,000 acres of wilderness for adventurers and explorers to take advantage of. Hike, bike, horseback ride, and fish. Trouts are plentiful and will practically jump into boats. A section of the Appalachian Trail follows the ridgeline, and thru-hikers and section-hikers are rewarded with sweeping vistas of the wide valleys on either side of the mountain. At the southernmost point, people who crest the Weverton Cliffs will have a fantastic view of the Virginia valley to the south, as well as a glimpse of West Virginia’s Harpers Ferry to the west. Bring your camper rental from Walkersville and enjoy the several RV-and trailer-friendly campgrounds.

Catoctin Mountain Park is a sizeable park with several thousand acres of pure wilderness. It’s also where Camp David is located, the favored vacation spot of many US presidents. Hikers and outdoorsmen needn’t worry about inadvertently running afoul of Secret Service. The boundaries are well marked. Catoctin is the site of one of the few natural waterfalls in this part of Maryland. In autumn, the oak and maple trees blaze fire, and the waterfall is quite scenic. Photographers and nature lovers will appreciate this spot. There are a couple of state-run campgrounds in this park, and while all can accommodate a rental RV, hookups are limited.

RV Parks

When searching for the perfect RV rental, be sure to figure out where to park overnight. Although Walkersville is somewhat rural, street parking is frowned upon. Several of Maryland State Parks have campgrounds with a varying degree of amenities. Gambrill State Park’s Rock Run campground may be a good candidate. It’s in a secluded, quiet area of Catoctin Mountain Park and is adjacent to a fishing pond. Step out of your RV rental and catch a string of fish for breakfast. Reserve well in advance; space is limited.

The Manor Area, just off Route 15, is close to the Scales and Tales Aviary and Catoctin Iron Furnace, which may be of interest. This campsite is open year-round, though, in wintertime, restroom and water services are limited.

Exploring the City

Although Walkersville is a quiet bedroom community, there’s plenty of things to see and places to go. A Walkersville luxury RV rental will make it easy to get around in style. Ride in the vintage 1920s rail cars as the steam engine train zips around the scenic Maryland countryside. Walkersville Southern Railroad operates only May through October, although there are special rides to commemorate holidays or certain events.

Catoctin Wildlife Preserve, on the outskirts of Thurmond, MD, has hundreds of exotic and rare critters from jaguars to two-humped camels. The preserve is committed to protecting endangered animals from extinction and aims to help people understand the animal world. In addition to daily safari rides, they also have Animal encounters programs in which guests can interact and touch the ambassador animals. Ride camels, feed parakeets, and pet a baby alligator, bearded dragon, or even a chinchilla.

The Weinberg Center for the Arts housed in the historic Tivoli theater is an example of the decadent roaring 1920s art deco architecture. The Frederick Center regularly hosts live and filmed events ranging from live symphony orchestra to dance groups. Past headliners have included well-known names like George Carlin, the Temptations, Hal Holbrook, and Tom Jones.

A Walkersville RV rental will make it easy to take advantage of Maryland’s offerings and to find the perfect adventure!
