On the northern edge of Baltimore’s urban sprawl, Towson, Maryland is a lively commercial hub and residential community that’s surrounded by recreational reserves. The indigenous Susquehannock people initially settled it before Pennsylvania brothers, William and Thomas Towson established it as a farming center in the mid-18th century.

The village was originally named “Towsontown” after the Towson Hotel where farmers refueled after bringing their products to the port of Baltimore. Today, it’s still a popular place for residents to dine and shop, making it an attractive destination to rent an RV and explore the sights of Baltimore County.

You can stretch your legs along the miles of hiking trails that hug the lake shores while keeping your eyes peeled for woodpeckers, blue jays, and bald eagles. Want to take to the water? Stop in at the Loch Raven Fishing Center where you can rent kayaks and a range of fishing equipment to lure bass and northern pike.

Also nearby is the Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville where you can learn about the region’s native wildlife at its nature center. Get up close to live reptiles and browse the archaeological artifacts that were uncovered here, then learn about the park’s historic mining and iron furnace operations. There are plenty of walking trails to explore, as well as a restored tenant house and sugar shack that’s used for the production of maple syrup.

A short drive east of Towson lies the Honeygo Run Regional Park, which is ideal for those traveling with pets thanks to its large dog park. Follow the Red Trail that leads through marshy grasslands to the Big Rocks viewpoint or opt for one of the trails through the nearby Gunpowder Falls State Park. This multi-section park also has another tract of protected area overlooking the Gunpowder River where you can swim and kayak while spotting osprey and ruddy ducks.
