Established in 1830, Mount Airy is a mid-sized town in Maryland, and less than an hour's drive from both Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Mount Airy first came into existence around an important train station on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Early on, much of its growth was spurred on by its milling and canning industries, along with its favorable location near the National Road which connected Baltimore and Illinois.

Mount Airy today is more of a bedroom community for the massive cities nearby, with a more laidback existence and atmosphere. Its charming historic districts and homes are still standing, giving it a unique flavor in the middle of scenic Maryland. Interstate 70 has replaced the National Road, and breathed new life into Mount Airy, while easily connecting it to the large metro areas of the East Coast.

When you book an RV in Mount Airy, you will have lots of places to explore. Between the numerous parks and natural areas in Maryland’s countryside and the endless attractions in Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Mount Airy really covers a full spectrum. The best time to visit this cheerful town is during one of its many festivals, as Mount Airy loves a good party. The Main Street Heat Chili Cook-Off, MayFest, FallFest, and several other events offer guests an opportunity to live like a local for a few days.

The Great Outdoors

Maryland is chock full of magnificent little parks, administered on nearly every level. Town parks, county parks, regional parks, and state parks in Maryland are always top notch, so you can’t go wrong wherever you go. When you bring your Mount Airy RV rental to Seneca Creek State Park, you’ll know you have made the right decision. Most of the park consists of peaceful wooded glens and riparian habitats teeming with local wildlife. There are fishing ponds, hiking and biking trails, a disc golf course, a 27-hole golf course, and a campground you can use when you rent an RV and need a place to stay the night.

Patapsco Valley State Park is broken up into a few different sections, but most of it can be found near Baltimore. The park is celebrated as Maryland’s first official state park, created back in 1907. Scattered throughout its many different areas, you can find playgrounds, picnic shelters, day use areas, campgrounds, hiking paths, and cascading waterfalls in scarcely traveled parts of the forest. Furthermore, there is a nature center where people may learn about the environment and the native wildlife.

South Mountain State Park and Greenbrier State Park are not far from Mount Airy either, with more recreational opportunities to take advantage of. Part of the legendary Appalachian Trail cuts through these parks in one of the state’s most naturally gorgeous areas, making it a popular spot for thru-hikers and casual hikers. There is a large human-made lake at Greenbrier State Park, where you can go swimming, boating, or fishing, as well as miles of hiking trails surrounding the lake.

If you have lots of time and don’t mind a longer drive, Shenandoah National Park is one of the most popular parks in the entire country. Its Skyline Drive alone is worth seeing the park, with over 100 miles of jaw-dropping views atop one of the world’s most stunning roads. You can luxuriate in elegant sunsets and magnificent fall foliage from the comfort of your Mount Airy RV rental when you travel over the Blue Ridge Mountains, and camp out in several different campgrounds along the way.
