Near where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay, Lexington Park is a rapidly growing town in Southern Maryland. The area was originally inhabited by the Yaocomico people of the Piscataway Indian Nation before being settled by tobacco farmers in the 17th century who took advantage of slave labor.

The town of Lexington Park was officially established in 1943 when the Patuxent Naval Air Station was created and named after the recently sunk USS Lexington, although recently it’s become a hub for aerospace and high-tech companies. Its proximity to waterfront reserves and excellent museums makes it a great destination to rent an RV while exploring St. Mary’s County.

Discover Lexington Park

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Lexington Park and make the short drive west to St. Mary's State Park, which sprawls across two sections that are connected by a narrow nature corridor. Hit the water to go fishing and kayaking on picturesque St. Mary’s Lake or follow one of the numerous hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails that meander along its shores. Alternatively, venture to the largely undeveloped tract of the state park that lies to the north, with St. Mary’s River carving through the center.

Also nearby is the Greenwell State Park in Hollywood which encompasses the Rosedale Manor House and the Bonds-Simms tobacco barns that overlook the Patuxent River. You can discover the history behind this old farm that was donated by John Phillip Greenwell, Jr. and his sister, Mary Wallace Greenwell or get active on one of the nature trails. Aside from hiking and horseback riding, the Greenwell State Park is also a popular destination for fishing, canoeing, and swimming.

Another coastal park worth exploring is the Calvert Cliffs State Park, which lies a short drive north across the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge from Lexington Park. It protects a spectacular, 24-mile-long stretch of cliffs that plummet to the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and has become famed as a fossil-hunting destination. Stroll along the sandy beach while keeping your eyes peeled for the fossilized teeth of giant sharks or explore some of the 13 miles of hiking trails that wind through the surrounding forest.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Lexington Park and pull into one of the 67 RV sites at La Grande Resort RV Inc. They’re situated beneath a forested canopy and open throughout the year, with full hookups available, as well as an RV storage facility.

It’s just a short drive from La Grande Resort RV Inc. to the Take It Easy Campground. Aside from their more than 240 sites with 30 or 50-amp service, the campground also features a fishing pond, a prayer chapel, and a swimming pool, as well as numerous picnic facilities.

Also nearby is the Goose Creek Camping & RV Resort, a waterfront RV destination overlooking the Bogue Sound. Pets are welcome to join you, and it’s popular with families thanks to a children’s playground, a game room, and an outdoor swimming pool.

You can also make the 10-minute drive to the Walmart in California where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Lexington Park and spend an afternoon exploring the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum to the north of the city center. Aside from detailing the history of the base, it also features exhibits that explore the advancing US Naval aviation technology. Browse the old photographs and memorabilia from various stations around the region, then get up close to military aircraft that includes a Lockheed Martin X-35C, a Beechcraft T-34 Turbo Mentor, and a Sikorsky Sea King.

Lexington Park also makes a good base for visiting the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, which details the maritime history and marine ecology of the region. Witness the heritage-listed William B. Tennison bugeye and the J. C. Lore Oyster House, as well as the historic Drum Point Light where old artifacts are displayed. The Calvert Marine Museum also features a range of aquatic exhibits where you can get up close to stingrays, lionfish, and North American river otters.

If you’re interested in the history of the region, make the short drive south to Historic St. Mary's City, which features a collection of recreated 17th-century buildings and an archaeological museum. This open-air museum is staffed by characters in period dress who will illustrate colonial games and teach you what life was like in a plantation household. You can step aboard the historic tall ship “Maryland Dove” and discover how the Yaocomico people lived at the Woodland Indian Hamlet, then tour the monumental Catholic Church.

Lexington Park is home to a couple of large supermarkets where you can pick up grocery supplies, as well as fast food eateries and restaurants for dining out. There are also plenty of gas stations if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Lexington Park.

Whether you’re visiting St. Mary’s County for its history museums or waterfront parks, book an RV in Lexington Park and start planning your next adventure.
