The area that would become Ijamsville was farmed for nearly a century before a man named Plummer Ijams purchased several acres in 1785. The family of Plummer Ijams, a second-generation American, was originally from Wales, the land of weird names. Ijams and his children, Plummer Jr and John, worked the land, and later, built a grist mill (flour mill) to harvest and refine their wheat crops, rather than outsource it. When a rich vein of slate was discovered nearby, mining and quarry enterprises popped up, and the settlement began to grow.

And grow it did. The bustling little village got to the point where the residents had to request a post office to be established. In those days, a post office was usually built only after a railroad company had laid down tracks through a settlement. The U.S. Postal Service obliged, and the town name, Ijamsville, was born.

Today, Ijamsville is a quiet bedroom community for Frederick, MD, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.

The Great Outdoors

A common reason to book an RV in Ijamsville, MD, is to gain access to dozens of wilderness parks in the area. Of all the parks within 30 miles, the largest is actually a collection of state parks lined up like beads on a string, atop the South Mountain ridge. South Mountain, Greenbrier, Washington Monument, and Gathland State Parks collectively make up nearly 75,000 acres of pure wilderness. Between the Appalachian Trail (AT), which follows the ridgeline, and the tertiary trails, there are over 100 miles of multi-use trails. Hike, bike, and horseback ride. Some sections of the AT are challenging but rewarding. Determined hikers are rewarded with a sweeping view of the valleys to the west and east. On a clear day, people who ascend the Weverton Cliffs can not only see the valley on the Virginia side but also West Virginia’s Harper Ferry.

A few miles to the east, Patapsco Valley State Park is a massive 50,000-acre park with well over 200 miles of multi-use trails. In springtime and early summer, the main Patapsco, South Branch, and North Branch rivers are popular for whitewater rafting. Some years, certain sections of the rivers can attain ranks of as high as Class IV. After the water settles down, these rivers are stellar for trout fishing: fast-moving waters and shallow pools. Get an adventure of a lifetime when you rent an RV in Ijamsville.

RV Parks

When searching for an RV rental, also consider where you’ll park overnight. Although this area is rural, street parking is frowned upon. There are a number of campgrounds, both public and private, in the area. The Little Bennett Campground near Clarksburg, has full hookups and easy access to fishing streams and hiking trails. Space for RVs, however, is limited. Book well in advance, particularly in the summer months.

Alternatively, Indian Flats Campsite, near Dickerson, MD, might be a good option. Although it’s “rustic” (as in it has no hookups), it overlooks the Potomac River and is a scenic spot. A potential snag is, though it has water, it is not treated. Campers are advised to bring purification tablets and boil water.

Sometimes it’s necessary to make an unplanned stop overnight. Walmart stores are known to be friendly to the RV community. There is a Walmart in Frederick. However, it’s in the heart of the downtown area and is highly trafficked. The Walmart store in Mt. Airy is quieter and may be more amenable to hosting an RV rental. Be sure to ask the store manager for permission beforehand.

Exploring the City

As rural as this part of the state is, there’s plenty of things to do and places to see. An Ijamsville RV rental makes it easy to get around the countryside. Escape the humidity and swing by the Adventure Park USA in Monrovia. The family-friendly arcade/amusement park is chock full of fun for both kids and adults alike. Laser tag, climbing wall, mini golf, and even twisty, wild roller coaster rides.

The Green Meadow Petting Zoo has over 250 livestock animals for up-close, hands-on experience. Pet pigs, cows, goats, and chickens. Guests can learn how to milk cows, feed baby animals (typically in springtime), and explore the play area.

Hit the links! The Whiskey Creek Golf Course is open to the public and has earned rave reviews from the Golf Magazine, which also rated it the third-best public golf course in the state. The course was designed by J. Michael Poellot, an architect with over 40 years of experience. The holes are designed to test a player’s ability to make the shot and strategy skills. This golf course is just one of the many in the area. A motorhome rental near Ijamsville will make it easy to explore the other courses in central Maryland.

The mild winters and temperate, occasionally humid summers translate into ideal growing conditions for grapes. Vineyards and wineries are a thriving industry in central and northern Maryland. Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is an award-winning winery, regularly seizing coveted prizes at national and international competitions. Try a range of whites and reds in their tasting room, which looks out on hundreds of acres of grapes laid out in neat rows over rolling hills. The tasting room is open daily, and on Saturdays, the staff guides guests on tours of the grounds, detailing the modern vineyard process. Weather permitting, live concerts are held on the patio, just outside the tasting room, every weekend.

A luxury RV rental from Ijamsville, MD, makes it easy to enjoy all that Maryland has to offer!
