Hyattsville, Maryland lies just north of Washington D.C. proper and has become a popular bedroom community with working professionals who prefer a more suburban living space. It’s well connected with the district via train and metro lines, and when you book an RV in Hyattsville, it might be best to leave it parked and use public transportation when exploring the capital.
In recent years, the downtown area of Hyattsville has undergone a massive revitalization project to transform it into an attractive arts district. While much of this has consisted of remodeling commercial spaces into upscale lofts, a number of excellent restaurants have also popped up, making it a hip alternative to downtown D.C.
When you rent an RV in Hyattsville, you’ll be freeing yourself of the dense traffic and crowds found in the capital city too. The area to the north of Hyattsville is quite calm, and one would never guess when staying there that they’re close to one of the nation’s largest cities.
One of the best parks to visit when you get an RV rental in Hyattsville is Bladensburg Waterfront Park in nearby Bladensburg. Not only does it have some excellent walking trails but also kayaks and pontoon boats are available for rent to use on the park’s pond. This is one of the best places to watch the sunset when you choose a camper rental in Hyattsville.
There are also several trails crossing the city’s green space where Sligo Creek and the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River meet. They won’t provide a full day of hiking, but they’re perfect for walking the dog, and there’s even a dedicated dog park near the trailhead on Ager Road.
A bit farther away is Rock Creek Park, a 2,000-acre green space that splits the northern suburbs of Washington D.C. In addition to the park’s extensive trail system, there are also a tennis stadium, a golf course, a nature center, and a planetarium to enjoy. It’s also home to Fort DeRussy, a Civil War-era bunker which has some of its stone walls still intact.
Due to the dense nature of the Washington D.C. area, it may be challenging to find a place to camp near Hyattsville. One of the closest options is Cherry Hill Park a short distance to the north on Route 1. The campground has full hookups for your motorhome rental from Hyattsville along with a swimming pool, splash park, mini-golf course, sauna, and bus rides into the capital. If you’re looking for an amenity-filled park that’s great for the family, Cherry Hill is a good place to consider.
A bit farther away, on the southern edge of Baltimore, is the Washington D.C./Capitol KOA Park. Like most KOA’s, this one has full hookups for your RV rental from Hyattsville, MD and a social atmosphere where you can meet up with fellow travelers. Its amenities include a dog park, swimming pool, bicycle rentals, and a shuttle to take you into downtown D.C. Travelers who are considering splitting their time between Baltimore and the Capital region will like the location of this KOA.
If you prefer a back-to-basics style of camping, you might enjoy the Greenbelt Campground, which is actually the closest campground to Hyattsville. Sites do not have hookups, but drinking water and dump stations are available in a communal area. There are also ten miles of hiking trails to enjoy within the park - an outdoor lovers dream.
Exploring the City
Given its proximity to the capital, it would be a mistake not to visit some of America’s most iconic sites when you choose a travel trailer rental in Hyattsville. Museums associated with the Smithsonian Institution include the Museum of Natural History, National Portrait Gallery, National Air and Space Museum, and National Zoo. You’ll also want to tour the sites at the National Mall like the Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Building, and Washington Monument. There are also several popular museums not affiliated with the Smithsonian like the Newseum, which features exhibits related to historical and present-day journalism, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is also worth visiting.
That’s not to say there’s nothing to do in Hyattsville itself though. The Mall at Prince Georges, on the north end of town, is Hyattsville’s only major shopping mall and has dozens of stores and eateries. A more unique (and tastier) experience can be found at Union Market, where some of the city’s most famous food stands are located along with dozens of independent retail outlets.
Undoubtedly, the best museums and nightlife will be found closer to D.C. in neighborhoods like Georgetown, but don’t feel that you need to go into the city to have a good time. College Park, home to the University of Maryland, has quite a few great restaurants lining its main street, Baltimore Avenue. This is also where you’ll find many of the yoga studios, gyms, and spas in the Hyattsville area.
