Gunpowder, Maryland is a borough on the outskirts of Baltimore. Named after the Gunpowder River which the town straddles, Gunpowder was founded in the 17th century by John Smith who explored the river and discovered iron ore, which would eventually help in the industrialization of the Baltimore area.
