Named after a local trader, John Clarke, Clarksburg, Maryland clusters around a newly-built town center in the far north of Montgomery County. It boasts a rich history as home to an 18th-century inn that hosted the army of General Edward Braddock during the French and Indian War, as well as being a meeting place for local Sons of Liberty leading up to the American Revolution.

Today, Clarksburg’s largely a residential community on the outskirts of Baltimore and Washington, D.C., attracting visitors with its large outlet mall. It’s surrounded by parks and recreational reserves that make it an attractive place to rent an RV while discovering the sights of Montgomery County.

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Clarksburg and make the short drive southeast to the Great Seneca Stream Valley Park, which centers around the 7.8-mile-long Seneca Creek Greenway Trail. Follow the picturesque route through woodlands and past the former sites of the Middlebrook Mills and the Watkins Mill, then across the natural rock bridge. The trail is accessible to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, with sweeping views of the creek and valley below.

Or, you can head southwest to the Hoyles Mill Conservation Park, a secluded and largely undeveloped natural area. It encompasses the Hoyles Mill Trail that extends from the Black Hill Regional Park to the South Germantown Recreation Park before terminating at Schaeffer Farms in the Seneca Creek State Park. If you’re traveling with kids, you might want to spend a day relaxing in the South Germantown Recreation Park, which is home to an adventure playground, mini golf facilities, and a splash park.

Another popular local green space is the Rock Creek Regional Park, which sprawls across 1,800 acres and encompasses both Lake Needwood and Lake Frank. There are plenty of nature trails where you can stretch your legs, as well as a children’s playground and boat rentals if you want to explore the lake waters at your leisure. Don’t forget to stop in at the Meadowside Nature Center that houses a range of hands-on natural and cultural history displays, as well as featuring a Raptor Walkway where you can get up close to an American bald eagle, hawks, and owls.
