Houma is the heart of America’s Cajun Country; while you might get a taste of Cajun culture in New Orleans, Houma is where you go to get the real deal. It’s where you’ll find the very best shrimp étouffée, the most perfectly spiced gumbo, and most delicious po’ boy sandwiches. The food alone is enough of a reason to book an RV in Houma, but it’s also a culturally important place to visit and one of the most unique regions in America.

Getting a travel trailer rental in Houma, LA can be an eye-opening experience; living life at sea level here can change quickly due to the forces of nature. The critically acclaimed film Beasts of the Southern Wild was actually filmed in Houma (though it’s based on the residents of nearby Isle de Jean Charles) and focuses on the difficult life circumstances of those trying to live and work just inches above sea level. It’s a culture under threat and one that’s too often missed as few tourists ever make it down to see the amazing sights of Houma, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and other parts of Cajun Country. Book a motorhome rental in Houma today and start exploring!

The Great Outdoors

Thanks to the vast network of canals, inlets, and estuaries, one of the most popular activities to do here is to take a fishing trip. To start angling, you’ll need to pick up a basic fishing license and a saltwater license since most of the waterways in the bayou are brackish. To avoid the paperwork though, it’s easiest to set yourself up with one of the many chartered fishing boats in the area, who can take care of everything for you.

Also, no trip to the Louisiana bayou would be complete with a swamp tour and a gator sighting. Thankfully, there are quite a few tour operators in that area willing to take you out on one of their exciting airboats to see the plethora of wildlife that the bayou has to offer.

While you’d think that finding a good hiking trail in the swamplands of southern Louisiana could be challenging, one of the best hikes in the area, Mandalay Refuge Nature Trail, is just a few miles outside of town. The boardwalk trail is under two miles out and back but passes through some stunning cypress swamp forests.

RV Parks

Finding a good RV park in the bayou can be a bit of a challenge as dry land comes at a premium. However, there are a few choices not too far from Houma. Capri Court is just on the northern end of town, just south of Highway 90, and offers full hookups, shower and laundry facilities, along with easy access to the fishing pier on the St. Louis Canal.

Another option is Hideaway Ponds RV Resort, near the town of Gibson. It’s a very family-friendly campground with a swimming pool, game room, and live music on the weekends. It also has full hookups for your Houma RV rental and is close to some great golf courses. If you’re thinking about visiting Cajun Country’s other main city, Lafayette, it’s just an hour's drive west of the campground.

Exploring the City

Perhaps the best place to learn about Cajun culture is at the Terrebonne Folklife Culture Center. It’s run by the National Park Service and is stocked with all sorts of interesting artifacts telling the story of the French-speaking Acadians (Cajuns). Originally from Eastern Canada, they were expelled by the British in the mid-1800s and came to make a life in the inhospitable bayous of southern Louisiana. For much of that time, they remained a marginalized community and only recently have outsiders taken an interest in their fascinating culture.

Not far from there is the small Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum, which has some excellent exhibits showing how many of the area’s residents make their living from the bayou waters doing things like fishing, shrimping, and drilling for oil miles below the water’s surface.

In addition to its rich Cajun history, Louisiana’s bayous are also home to a wealth of African American history. To learn more about it when you rent an RV in Houma, check out the Finding Our Roots African American Museum. It covers events that are rarely talked about in America’s history classes, like the time Georgetown University sold off over 200 slaves to pay their debts in the early 1800s.

Immerse yourself in the unique and fascinating culture of southern Louisiana. Explore the vast, watery expanses of wilderness and the vibrant cities of Lafayette and New Orleans when you book a travel trailer rental in Houma, Louisiana.
