Clay Center is a city in Clay County, Kansas, and also the county seat. It was established in 1862 and was granted a post office that same year. It is the geographical center of Clay County, which is how it received its name. It had two railroad lines passing through its territory, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad; the former was also known as “The Rock” before suspending its operations. It is home to the Piotique (“Pioneer” + “Antique”) Festival held each year in September to celebrate its history; local citizens and those who have moved away celebrate class and family reunions and civic happenings from the previous year. There are a 2k fun run and 10k mini-marathon, food vendors, live entertainment, and an outdoor dance held on the lawn of the Clay County Courthouse.

RV rentals in Clay County are a perfect match for all of your vacation plans, whatever they may be. While you are here, you can visit some of the nearby cities too. Washington has a community-built playground named Munchkinland and a unique dog-training center, KSDS, that provides service dogs for those in need. Waterville was established in 1868 and immediately became a cowtown along the Chisholm Trail, but its status was short-lived, and a government quarantine in the 1870s brought the cattle drives to an end. Your Clay Center travel trailer rental is your introduction to this scenic and historic area, but where you take it from there is up to you.

The Great Outdoors

Glen Elder State Park is a multipurpose recreational area that encompasses Waconda Lake and Glen Elder Reservoir. The dam was completed in 1968 to control flooding in the area. Hopewell Church, which was built in 1878, was moved to its current location in 1994 and is used as a living pioneer heritage museum. The area is a good destination for photographers, with bald and golden eagles, deer, pheasants, and Canada geese on hand, just to name a few species. Hunting and fishing are allowed, and there are several trails for hiking that are open all year (a permit is required to use them). Keep your Clay Center camper rental nearby, and you can enjoy a comfortable chair between or after your outdoor activities.

Tuttle Creek State Park is near Manhattan, KS and is one of several flood control projects in the Kansas River Basin but it also offers recreational opportunities to the public. Visitors can hike the trails that wind through the park or go fishing for bass, crappie, catfish (weighing up to 40 pounds), and other species. Tent camping is allowed, and there are cabins for rent. The area to the north of the lake is managed habitat for the park's resident wildlife; there are wetlands designated for waterfowl and migrating shorebirds and cropland that is managed to provide food for the park's inhabitants during the winter.

Milford State Park is situated on Milford Reservoir, one of Kansas' largest lakes, and is a popular destination for weekend getaways and anglers seeking walleye and a variety of bass, just to name a few fish species. Bald eagles populate the lake during the winter, and other wildlife can be viewed or photographed on the west and north sides of the lake. Hunting is allowed for turkey, deer, and smaller game, as is trapping for beaver and small game. Hiking and mountain biking can be enjoyed along numerous trails; there are a swimming beach, a disc golf course, and restrooms with showers.
