Getting Outdoors

Boating is popular on Storm Lake, and there is a marina at the west end with boat ramps, boat rental, and slips, plus the Lakeside Marina at the east end of the lake that also has a campground. A tackle shop is available at the marina, along with a boat supplies store that can provide equipment for water skiing and other water sports. Jet skiing is also popular, and there is a gas station available.

Fishing is very popular, and the lake is well stocked with a variety of species. Anglers can expect to catch white bass, black crappie, catfish, perch and, walleye. Parking for your rental RV is available at the marina.

There’s only one hiking trail at the lake, Storm Lake Trail that runs from along the full length of the north shore passing through several small parks along the way. It’s a 5-mile route that is mostly on concrete paths and some very quiet residential roads and gives unobstructed views of the lake along many stretches of the route. The trail can be easily accessed while you are motorhome camping at Storm Lake.

Just south of Storm Lake is the Twin Lake Trail, a seven-mile hike around the beautiful North Twin Lake on mostly concrete paths. The route can be extended by taking in the South Twin Lake four-mile loop, that is connected by a short stretch of a quiet road. The trails are great for families and our wheelchair accessible.

Camping at Storm Lake

There are two campgrounds on Storm Lake, almost next to each other at the east end of the lake. Lakeside Marina and Campground offers spacious campsites, with full hook-ups, with up to 50-amp electric, water, and sewage connections. Lakeside campsites are available, and every site has a picnic table and fire ring for outdoor cooking and eating. There is a swimming beach at the marina, just a short walk from the campground and plenty of opportunities to get out on the water. A great location for camping at Storm Lake.

The other camping is Sunrise Campground, just a short distance north of the marina. It offers over 100 campsites, with more than 30 full hook-up sites, including electric, water, and sewerage. Restrooms with hot showers and flushing toilets are available as is a laundry. Anglers will find a fish cleaning station on-site, perfect for getting your fish straight from the lake to the barbecue!

Exploring the Area

The city of Storm Lake is located along the north shore of the lake and offers every convenience you need while camping with an RV. Along with many gas stations, the usual fast-food restaurants and plenty of other food choices, there is also lots of shopping opportunities.

While in the city, visit some historical sites to learn about the area. Harker House is a beautiful stately home built in 1875 by the Harker family. Three generations of the family have maintained the property, keeping furniture and heirlooms, and other artifacts from the Victorian period. Of particular interest are the Civil War Sketches, depicting life as a Union Soldier from Buena Vista County.

In Sunset Park, on the lake shoreline is the Living Heritage Tree Museum. The idea is to plant trees that are connected with famous people or events in history. You’ll find the Joan of Arc Willow, which is a tree grown from a seed of a tree in Joan of Arc’s birthplace. The museum is free to enter and explore, and Sunset Park is a nice area to spend a relaxing afternoon. It has a playground, picnic area and, restrooms, and is halfway along the Storm Lake Trail.
