As well as being a gateway town to some majestic State Parks, Mitchell has a rich and varied history. This intriguing town is well known throughout the state for being the birthplace of astronaut Virgil Gus Grissom, the second American to fly into space!

The Great Outdoors

Indiana is full of beautiful state parks, making it a paradise for any lovers of the great outdoors. Mitchell is no exception to this. As well as being conveniently close to some of the larger parks, Mitchell has its own network of hidden gems located five minutes from the center.

Spring Mill State Park, just a six-minute drive out of town, has some incredible unique features to discover. In particular, this park is known for the extensive networks of caves that lie beneath it. You can catch a glimpse of the caves from the outside, but the best way to really get to know them is on a tour. You must be over 16 years of age to enter the caves, and swimming skills are essential. However, those who are brave enough will be rewarded with beautiful interiors of ancient limestone caves.

Now that you have arrived in your motorhome rental from Mitchell, it is well worth checking out what the great outdoors has to offer a little further afield. Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge is ideal for anyone who enjoys a day of wildlife spotting in rivers, grasslands, and even caves. Another pearl is Hoosier National Forest near Bloomington. You could easily spend a week here, completing the numerous trails by foot, on horseback, or even mountain bike!

Exploring the City

The downtown area of Mitchell has been listed as a National Historic Site for many years now, so it is well worth taking a stroll through the middle of town to spot some of the impressive antique buildings.

Whilst you are wandering through town, look out for the monuments dedicated to the late Virgil Gus Grissom. Consider a stop at the rocket memorial in the center of town, an interesting insight into his accomplishments as an astronaut, and how his passion unfortunately cost him his life. Just around the corner from here, you can find Grissom’s childhood home. The house been carefully preserved and renovated into a museum that recounts Grissom’s early years and how they shaped him into the American Hero he is known as today. For a more comprehensive history of Grissom’s life and career, head to the Memorial Museum in Spring Mill State Park.

Whilst in the park, be sure to pay a visit to Pioneer Village. Rated as one of the best activities in Mitchell, this historical village houses over 20 different buildings representing life as it were back in the days of the pioneers. This historical site not only makes you feel as though you have stepped back in time, but it does so in a very beautiful and serene environment.
