Established in the early 19th century as Hunts Cross Road, Losantville is a small town in the east of Indiana. Its name was changed to Losantville in the 1850s (with this being an early name for Cincinnati), with a post office officially opening in the town in 1854.

Today, Losantville is a quiet and laid-back place to rent an RV while exploring the fishing reservoirs and recreation areas to the east of Indianapolis. It’s well-served by family-friendly campgrounds and just a short drive from all the services you need in nearby Muncie.

Discover Losantville

The Great Outdoors

Book a camper rental in Losantville and make the short drive west to the Summit Lake State Park. It centers around an 800-acre lake that’s surrounded by woodlands, wetlands, and restored tracts of prairie that provide a habitat for myriad plants and more than 100 species of birds. Stretch your legs along one of the hiking trails or cast a line to see what’s biting, then visit the Zeigler Woods Nature Preserve that nestles in the southwest corner of the park.

Just to the north lies the Prairie Creek Reservoir, which serves as a recreation hub for the city of Muncie. There’s everything from boating and fishing to hiking and dirt bike riding on offer, as well as numerous horse riding and ATV trails. Near the western shore of the Prairie Creek Reservoir is the Munsee Woods Nature Preserve, which protects a glacial meltwater valley and its spring-fed wetlands that sustain a variety of flora and fauna species.

Drive south from Losantville, and you’ll arrive at Brookville Lake, which is home to the Whitewater Memorial State Park and the Mounds State Recreation Area. Both are popular fishing destinations, with walleye, bass, and bluegill all for the taking. Learn about the remains of prehistoric Native American mounds that have been found here in the Whitewater River Valley or stretch your legs along the miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails that wind through the two reserves.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Losantville and make the short drive east to the Kamp Modoc Family Campground & Play Lake, which nestles amidst rolling hills on the outskirts of town. It offers more than 280 spacious campsites (most with full hookups), as well as a jumping pad and a swimming area with a pool, waterslide, and water trampoline.

Or, head southeast towards Richmond and the Natural Springs Resort, an RV park and recreation destination in neighboring Ohio. It’s been designed with families in mind and centers around a freshwater lake where you can go swimming, fishing, or even scuba diving. There is a range of full hookups (with both pull-through and back-in sites available), not to mention an on-site swimming pool.

Drive in the other direction, and you’ll arrive at the Timberline Valley RV Resort, which overlooks the picturesque White River near Anderson. There are almost 100 RV sites to select from, with either 30 or 50 amp service, as well as picnic tables and fire rings where you can mingle with other guests.

You can also make the 25-minute drive into Muncie where you’ll find a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Losantville and make the short drive north to Muncie, which is home to the Ball State University and its 150-foot-tall Shafer Tower. Browse the exhibits at the David Owsley Museum of Art or explore the impressive collection at the National Model Aviation Museum. Traveling with kids? The city also features the Muncie Children's Museum whose interactive exhibits include a simulated dinosaur bone dig and the Discovery Park play area.

Spend an afternoon exploring Minnetrista, a large campus that features a museum and themed gardens in the Minnetrista Boulevard Historic District. Join a guided tour of George Alexander Ball’s late-19th-century residence, with its first-floor rooms furnished as they would have appeared during the 1920s. Wander through the native habitat gardens and the beautifully landscaped sunken gardens, together with a dedicated children’s garden where young visitors can get hands-on.

Losantville also makes a good base for visiting Indianapolis, which lies just over an hour’s drive to the southwest. Delve into the local history at the Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum and soak up the 360-degree views from the Monument Circle observation deck, then discover the downtown area along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. You can be inspired by the fusion of art and nature at the Newfields museum or get up close to the largest population of orangutans in the United States at the Indianapolis Zoo.

Losantville has a supermarket where you can pick up groceries, as well as a pizzeria if you want to dine out. There is also a gas station if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Losantville.

Whether you’re visiting Randolph County for its lakeside reserves or proximity to Indianapolis, book an RV in Losantville and start exploring.
