Situated on the banks of the Patoka River, Jasper is a lively city that serves as the seat of Dubois County in southern Indiana. It was founded in 1818 by the Enlow family, with the matriarch suggesting they name the settlement after a passage in the Bible.
Jasper lies just a stone’s throw from the Hoosier National Forest and all its recreational pursuits, making it a great place to rent an RV. There are plenty of picturesque campgrounds in the immediate vicinity while the bright lights and cultural attractions of Louisville are just across the border in Kentucky.
Book a camper rental in Jasper and drive into the Hoosier National Forest, which sprawls across more than 200,000 acres to the east of the city. It’s traversed by more than 250 miles of trails, such as the famous Hemlock Cliffs Trail, as well as numerous mountain biking and horseback riding routes. Aside from its outdoor pursuits, the forest is also home to the heritage-listed Potts Creek Rockshelter Archeological Site, as well as the historic Jacob Rickenbaugh House, a Greek Revival-style sandstone residence that’s open for guided tours between spring and fall.
If you want to get out on the water, head to the immense Patoka Lake, which, at 8,800 acres, is the second largest reservoir in Indiana. It was created by the damming of the Patoka River and is now a hub for migratory birdwatching, hiking, and cycling, as well as boating and fishing. It’s heavily stocked with bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye, with ice fishing and cross-country skiing both popular here during the winter months.
A short drive west of Jasper is the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge, which comprises numerous habitats and individual tracts of land along the Patoka River. It’s an important wintering area for many species of birds, including bald eagles and the endangered least tern, as well as bobcats, river otters, and Indiana bats. A highlight is the Columbia Mine Preserve (the largest piece of the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge) where the 1.5-mile Indian Hill Trail accesses a picturesque portion of the refuge and one of its oxbow lakes.
Pick up your RV rental in Jasper and make the short drive east to the Painter Creek RV Park in French Lick near the shores of Patoka Lake. This pet-friendly campground offers full hookups with 30 or 50 amp service, as well as a small camp store where you can purchase firewood, ice, and camping essentials.
Slightly farther north is the Patoka Lake Campground where you’ll find 450 electric sites with asphalt-surfaced pads. There are picnic tables, a fish cleaning station, and fire pits available, with pets welcome to stay with you.
Park your RV rental near Jasper and head to the Dubois County Museum Inc, which details the region’s rich German heritage. Browse the exhibits that include a wild game safari display and a model train, as well as two rooms that are packed with artifacts and historic photographs. There are also 14 community murals to admire that illustrate the community’s early years and how its resilient settlers worked hard to turn the county’s natural resources in thriving industries.
Sports fans shouldn’t miss a visit to the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame, which is situated on the Vincennes University campus. Learn about the players and coaches who have left their mark on the game while browsing the impressive collection of baseball artifacts that are on display. A highlight of the museum is the “You Make the Call” interactive station where you get to decide whether the pitches being hurled at you are a “ball” or “strike.”
Jasper also makes a good base for exploring Louisville, which is around 90 minutes’ drive to the east. Visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory on“Museum Row” or discover the legacy behind the state’s most legendary horse race at the Kentucky Derby Museum. If you’re traveling with kids, get up close to tigers and gorillas at the Louisville Zoo or head to the Louisville Mega Cavern, a former limestone cavern that’s been transformed into an underground mountain bike park with a zip line and ropes course.
Jasper is home to numerous supermarkets where you can pick up groceries, as well as a good selection of fast food restaurants and eateries if you want to dine out. There are also plenty of gas stations if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Jasper.
