Columbus is the county seat of Bartholomew County, Indiana, a midsize city located south of Indianapolis, on the White River. It is the collector of titles such as “Athens on the Prairie” (its nickname), “One of the Ten Most Playful Towns” (by Nick Jr. Family Magazine) and “One of the Sixty Two Reasons to Love your Country” (by GQ Magazine). National Geographic Traveler described the city in 2008 as “authentic, unique and unspoiled”. Traversing this heavenly city in your Columbus luxury RV rental can only add to your pleasure.

Columbus was originally known as Tiptonia, after General John Tipton, who built a cabin on Mount Tipton, looking down on the White River. In 1821, the town's name was changed to Columbia, prompting the General to leave; he later returned as Indiana's highway commissioner, overseeing a project to build a highway to Louisville, Kentucky, from Indiana. Tipton planned the highway to go around Columbus, inadvertently creating the first ever bypass road in history (although he may have had other intentions).

Columbus has many claims to fame, but most notably for being an art and architecture center; many civic buildings have been declared historical landmarks, such as the Crump Theatre and the Irwin Union Bank. It has numerous notable people, such as politician and Vice President Mike Pence, professional athletes, business people, authors and singers/musicians.

RV rentals in Bartholomew County are the perfect vehicle for being your holiday home away from home. Other nearby cities of interest are Franklin, Greensburg, North Vernon, Seymour and Nashville (Indiana, not Tennessee), and your Columbus camper rental is your ticket to getting there.

The Great Outdoors

Brown County State Park is a good place to start your adventure. The 16,000 acres of ridges, ravines, and hills were created by the last ice age, which created the environment with its meltwaters. It is Indiana's largest park, having 20 miles of roads lined with trees that are the front of an extensive uninterrupted forest. The park's color is autumn-hued, with viewpoints looking out over the entire area; it has interpretive services, a swimming pool, hiking and biking trails, horse trails and guided horse rides. It is open all year round, although opening-closing times may change according to the season. Touring the park in your Columbus motorhome rental may be possible, but you should check with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources for further information.

In 1940, the federal government leased land to Indiana; it was designated as a park at that time, and later deeded to Indiana permanently. At the time of its creation, the land was in poor condition, with eroded and dying forests, but reforestation efforts were able to counteract the erosion and return the land to good health. Reforestation efforts focused on planting seeds for red, jack, shortleaf, scotch and white pines, black locust, black walnut, white and red oak, but only some of the species survived while most of the others were affected by insects, disease and harsh winters. Today, Yellowwood State Forest is a good destination for hiking, picnicking, fishing, hunting and gold panning (but you will need a license to pan for gold). The hiking trails range from one to 42 miles in length but most are only one to four miles long.

RV Parks

Columbus Woods-n-Waters is an older campground; amenities include water and electricity. The campground has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, a store, and a playground.

Westward Ho Campground is 12 miles west, in Nashville, Indiana, and has sites with full hookups, Wi-Fi, and level gravel pads. The park offers restrooms and showers, a small swimming pool and nearby lake where you can swim or go fishing. There are hiking trails around the lake and a flea market next door.

Exploring The City

Perhaps the best place to begin exploring the city is with a guided tour; there are a couple tour companies offering tours of an important city residence and architectural tours of the buildings that have helped to make Columbus popular. There are dozens of buildings on the architectural tour, which takes approximately two hours to complete. Those who prefer the scenery without the detailed explanations can use their Columbus RV rental to take their own scenic tour, captured on camera for further investigation later on.

There are several museums of interest, one focused on children's interests, another catering to air and military themes, and one that deals with the history of... ice cream. It was opened in 1900 and is still in operation today. This third museum is reported to be like walking into a time capsule, with antiquated soda machines and everything else you would expect to find in an ice cream parlor from decades ago.

Foodies will be in culinary heaven in Columbus, which has Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese restaurants to start with, plus a venue dedicated specifically to sushi. There are Italian and Mexican restaurants, pizzerias and more. Prices range from cheap eats to moderately priced fares, which families will appreciate. Those wishing for some peace and quiet after a busy day can throw something together in their Columbus travel trailer rental; nothing spells vacation like an enjoyable meal eaten under the stars.
