Situated at the southern edge of Brookville Lake, Brookville is a historic town in the far east of Indiana. It was laid out in 1808 by Thomas Manwarring and is still clustered with heritage-listed buildings that date from the early 19th century.

Brookville’s proximity to lakeside reserves and wooded parks makes it a great place to rent an RV while exploring Indiana’s border region with Ohio. It’s well-served by family-friendly campgrounds while being less than an hour’s drive from the heart of Cincinnati.

Discover Brookville

The Great Outdoors

Book a motorhome rental in Brookville and make the short drive north to the Mounds State Recreation Area, which hugs the eastern shores of Brookville Lake. It’s named after the remains of prehistoric Native American mounds that are found throughout the Whitewater River Valley while also being known for its deposits of Ordovician fossils. There are more than 25 miles of hiking trails to explore and two swimming beaches, as well as good walleye fishing in the lake waters.

At the northern end of Brookville Lake is the Whitewater Memorial State Park, which was established in honor of the American soldiers who lost their lives during World War I & II. It centers around Whitewater Lake, which is a popular houseboating destination and is surrounded by five different hiking trails and a nine-mile-long horse trail. Cast a fishing line to lure bass and bluegill or cool off with a swim at one of the beaches, then visit the Hornbeam Nature Preserve that’s situated inside the state park and is renowned for its rare hornbeam trees.

A short drive northeast of Brookville takes you to the Hueston Woods State Park, which lies just over the border in Ohio. It encompasses nearly 3,000 acres around a human-made lake, with a network of hiking trails where you can spot resident wildlife, such as beavers, white-tailed deer, and cottontail rabbits. Don’t miss the opportunity to photograph the red-and-white Hueston Woods Covered Bridge and visit the 19th-century brick farmhouse at the Doty Homestead, which is open to the public on select weekends.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Brookville and make the short drive south to the Indian Lakes RV Campground in Batesville. This pet-friendly campground features a range of waterfront sites and an on-site store, as well as a children’s playground, recreational courts, and laundry facilities.

Or, head north to the Fox Run Campground on the edge of the Mounds State Recreation Area. There’s an attractive selection of wooded sites, as well as bathroom and shower facilities. If you continue driving north, you’ll arrive at the Quakertown Campground in Liberty. All of the sites have fire rings and picnic tables while being nestled in a picturesque, wooded setting.

You can also make the 25-minute drive north to Connersville where there’s a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Brookville and enjoy a stroll through the Brookville Historic District, which encompasses more than 680 buildings in the central business district and surrounding residential areas. Most date from the early 19th to early 20th centuries, including fine examples of Greek Revival and Federal-style architecture that are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Admire the James Brown Ray House that dates to 1811 and the elegant Old State Bank, as well as St. Michael’s Catholic Church that was constructed in the mid-19th century.

Also within the Brookville Historic District is the Franklin County Seminary, a historic school with a side gable roof that was constructed in 1831. It’s just a short stroll from The Hermitage, a Bungalow/American Craftsman-style residence that was once home to John Ottis Adams and Winifred Brady Adams. It features two artist studios at each end of the house where John Ottis Adams worked, as well as a sweeping front porch that’s supported by more than a dozen tapered columns.

If you want to get active, head to Skyward Adventures to participate in one of their adrenaline-pumping zip line tours. You can get a taste of what’s on offer during their Defy Gravity Tour or go the "whole nine yards” on their comprehensive Skyline Tour.

Brookville is home to a couple of supermarkets where you can pick up groceries, as well as a good selection of eateries if you want to dine out. There are also gas stations if you need to fill up your campervan rental in Brookville.
