On the breathtaking Hayden Lake in northern Idaho, only two hours south of the Canadian border and 35 miles east of Spokane, is the picturesque town of Hayden, Idaho. While the beginnings of the town are often disputed, there is no doubt that the settlers knew what they were doing. The town of Hayden is located in one of the most stunning regions of the country. Despite the broad range of exploration opportunity, both in the natural surroundings and in the nearby towns like Spokane, you may never want to leave Hayden proper as you gaze upon the lake and look up toward the surrounding mountains.

If you don’t feel like driving the Hayden RV rental around town every day, there is a public transit system operating throughout Kootenai County called Citylink. With over 150 stops throughout the county, Citylink offers easy access to Hayden and the surrounding areas.

After you book an RV in Hayden, you’re going to want to map out a plan of attack for this underrated part of the world. Luckily enough, you’ll have plenty of places to choose from as you begin your adventures across the Gem State.

The Great Outdoors

Marking the eastern border of town, Coeur d’Alene National Forest encompasses a mind-blowing 726,000 acres. With hundreds of miles of hiking opportunity, you can enjoy a day hike through the forests and marvel at the many waterfalls that dot the landscape or challenge yourself with a more vertical hike up one of the surrounding mountain peaks. With dozens of streams and rivers snaking their way through the national forest, and Lake Pend Oreille in the northern part of the forest, you can spend some time on the water, whether that is swimming, tubing, or kayaking. The lush Pacific Northwest vegetation is ever apparent in Coeur d’Alene; it’s almost as if you can feel the heartbeat of the Idahoan wilderness beneath your feet.

If you’re looking to give your Hayden, ID motorhome rental a little bit of exercise, head the roughly two and a half hours south to St. Joe National Forest. Although it doesn’t cover anywhere near as much land as its northern neighbor of Coeur d’Alene, Saint Joe offers visitors a very real glimpse into the natural Idahoan panhandle. You can take a leisurely stroll along the calmer parts of the St. Joe River, the river that cuts through the park. If you’re quiet, you may even see some local wildlife, such as moose or river otters. If you want something a little more adventurous, St. Joe River is known for its rapids, making it a wonderful spot for some whitewater rafting.

If long drives don’t scare you, then take your Hayden RV rental by owner the almost four hours south to Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. With four million acres of wilderness to explore, the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests showcase interwoven canyons, rivers, cedar forests, and grassland for as far as the eye can see. You can go for a day hike or push yourself with a multi-day backpacking excursion through some of Idaho’s best preserved natural terrain. You can also enjoy swimming, boating, and tubing down Salmon River or Corn Creek. Seek out Elk Creek Falls, in particular. About 50 miles east of Moscow, Idaho, the Elk Creek Falls system is made up of three waterfalls, and is the tallest waterfall system in Idaho at a towering 140 feet. At an almost four-hour drive away from Hayden, you may want to park your RV rental at one of the RV campsites for the night, or maybe the week.

RV Parks

When spending time in and around the area, you’re going to need to find a place to park your RV rental near Hayden for the night so you can rest and recharge for your days of adventuring.

One such place for RV travelers is the Tamarack RV Park and Vacation Cabins. On the south side of town, Tamarack RV Park offers visitors full hookups, laundry facilities, and restroom blocks with showers. You can enjoy campfires, picnics, and the serenity created by the towering Idahoan pines spread throughout the RV park.

Another popular spot for Hayden RV rental enthusiasts is Blackwell Island RV Park. Just south of town and on a little island within the Spokane River, Blackwell Island RV Park has sites with full hookups, on-site bathrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and a convenience store. On top of that, you can rent a canoe and explore Spokane River, spend some time at the river’s beach, and enjoy the nearby floating restaurant.

Exploring the City

After you’ve exhausted all of northern and central Idaho, you may want to turn your Hayden camper rental back toward town and get to know the local area a little bit better.

If you want to spend some time outdoors, but don’t want to make the multi-hour trek to one of the national forests, spend some time at Lake Hayden. On the eastern edge of town, Lake Hayden has beaches, docks for fishing, and plenty of places where you can rent a motorized or non-motorized boat for further exploration of the lake. Be sure to pack the sunscreen as you enjoy the day at this sapphire blue lake in the Gem State.

After a day of relaxing by the lake, maybe you want to get a little bit of energy out. Luckily, Hayden has just the place for you to spend the day. The Triple Play Family Fun Park has everything you could possibly want. With miniature golf, a ropes course, a water park, an arcade, bowling, go-karts, and so much more, you can easily spend your whole day at the park and still not have enough time to do everything you want to do.

A great way to refuel from all the energy you’ve expended hiking the mountain passes, swimming in the lakes, and climbing through the ropes course at Triple Play is to indulge in some Basque cuisine. From the Pyrenees region in western Europe, the ever-present Basque cuisine is courtesy of the immigrants who have come to call Idaho home. You can indulge in some croquetas, which are like southern hush puppies, but instead filled with a hearty combination of potatoes, meat, and cheeses, or maybe instead have your fill of seafood or chicken paella.
