Smyrna is a city in Cobb County, northwest of Atlanta, Georgia. The area around Smyrna was first settled in 1832 and a small religious camp, Smyrna Camp Ground, had established itself by the late 1830s. The religious camp became a popular tourist destination in Georgia. The area itself, including the camp, continued to grow and was known by a few names, such as Varner's Station and Ruff's Siding, among others. The area was incorporated as Smyrna in 1872 and has been known by this name since then. The city was the site of two Civil War battles in 1864, during which Sherman's troops burned homes, businesses, and a local covered bridge. The bridge was rebuilt and is still operational today. Smyrna citizens elected a woman mayor in 1946 and the city was a filming location for the movie Joyful Noise in 2011.

Book an RV in Cobb County and you are ready to begin exploring this scenic and interesting area. There are some other towns and cities that might also be intriguing and worth spending some time in. Marietta has six historic districts, four of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Lithonia has one area, East DeKalb, that is abundant in Gneiss granite; the city was named by a classics teacher in 1840, who combined the Greek words for “rock” (“Lith”) and “place” (“Onia”). Stockbridge is home to a number of celebrities, including several stock car drivers, a professional football player, and a professional baseball player. Palmetto is located in two different counties, Fulton and Coweta (most of the city lies in Fulton County). Winston was formerly incorporated as a city but is now an unincorporated community, existing in two different counties, Carroll and Douglas. Your Smyrna travel trailer rental is the perfect vehicle for getting an up-close look at these places and others.

The Great Outdoors

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is the location of an 1864 Civil War battle. There is a visitor's center that has displays of artifacts and shows a film explaining the battle, and there is also a gift shop. There are trails nearby where visitors can hike; trees provide shade and many of the trails interconnect and loop back, and have varying levels of difficulty. Occasionally the park will host reenactments of the battle.

Red Top Mountain State Park was an important mining area in the past but is now a public recreation area offering hiking and biking, swimming, and much more. It is located on a peninsula on Lake Allatoona, which surrounds it on three sides. One short trail is convenient for wheelchairs and strollers, others are more challenging. Visitors can also fish, waterski, or camp overnight. The park is a great location for photographers and contains Allatoona Pass Battlefield, another historical area with well-preserved trenches from the war.

Atlanta Botanical Garden is a cultured outdoor garden with water fountains and a conservatory. It routinely hosts lectures by experts, educational classes and other public events, in addition to a colorful array of plant and flower species. Keep your Smyrna RV trailer rental nearby and finish your tour of the garden with coffee and a lunch or snack.

Atlanta Marietta RV Resort Park is a rustic, semi-developed RV campground with paved roads. The park rents sites by the day, week, or month and has restrooms and showers, and a swimming pool. The park has a creek running through it. Individual sites are paved with patios and full hookups. There is wireless internet throughout the park and ethernet connections in the park office.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do around Smyrna, starting with numerous urban trails and historical areas. There is an aquarium with a variety of exhibits and daily shows, always a fun activity for young and not-so-young kids. A local stadium is home to the Atlanta Braves but also has a kids' area with a zip line and batting cage. Adults will enjoy the attached hotel with a rooftop pool that looks down at the stadium. There are theaters putting on live plays and there are a number of museums; one of the museums focuses on the movie Gone With the Wind. While you are here, make sure to put some time aside to take your Smyrna RV rental for a spin out on the local highways. This is what makes RV vacations special; you can't do that in a hotel room, can you?

Visitors have their choice of Chinese and Thai, seafood or barbecue, Mexican, Italian and Indian, and much more. One Caribbean restaurant has Central American and Puerto Rican items on their menu and offers outdoor seating. Guests dining here should try the beer can burrito with a side of corn. A local diner specialized in breakfast items and is vegetarian and vegan-friendly, with gluten-free options too. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and brunch. Portions are large, so be prepared to take some of your meal home to your Smyrna luxury RV rental for a midnight snack or next day's lunch, guilt-free and just as delicious as when you ordered it. This is vacation living at its best.
