The town of Franklin, Georgia is the county seat of Heard County, taking its name from Benjamin Franklin. The beautiful Chattahoochee River flows through the heart of town adding to the general charm of the area. There are numerous parks and natural areas nearby, which makes for great fishing or nature watching, while in town there are many shops, eateries and historical buildings to enjoy.

The town is located towards the western border of Georgia, with neighboring towns of Carrollton, Newnan, and LaGrange. The nearest big town is Atlanta, around an hour drive to the northeast.

Great outdoors

There are also plenty of hiking trails in the immediate vicinity to be enjoyed, and all sites offer the feeling of being off the beaten track. Also available at Banning Mills you will find one of the longest and highest zip line canopy tours in the world.

Just below Franklin, near the Georgia DNR Wildlife Management Area, is Brush Creek Park. The park contains a number of RV sites, perfect for a stopover in an RV rental from Franklin. This park is fairly primitive, but its position on West Point Lake may make up for the lack of amenities. Onsite there are a number of picnic pavilions, boathouses, a basketball field and basketball court, and a playground for folks of all ages to enjoy. Exploring the City

If you are looking for a bite to eat after a long fun-filled day out exploring, then choose from BBQ joints and fast food establishments to Mexican and Italian restaurants.

You could easily spend a few hours wandering through town, popping into a few shops and window shopping.

One of the more unusual attractions in town is actually the gas station. The station is now considered historical, having been built in 1938, and still features a vintage, hand-painted Coca-cola advertisement. If you have a few extra minutes during your adventure stop by to see this unique work of art painted on the side of the building, so don't forget your camera.

Another historical point of interest in town is the Old Heard County Jail, built in 1912, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1987 it was restored and now serves as a museum and historical center.
