Duluth’s most popular outdoor destination is probably the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Featuring 48 miles of river ready for rafting, canoeing, kayaking, and motor boating, this wildlife preserve is home to an enormous variety of local wildlife. Come see Duluth’s over 240 native bird species, and in the evenings be sure to keep an eye out for rabbits, white-tailed deer, bats, and more. Who knows—you might even catch a glimpse of a rare Chattahoochee alligator! The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area also has over seven miles of trails open to cyclists in its Cochran Shoals and Palisades units, winding their way through scenic hardwood forests. Meanwhile, in Suwanee, you can check out the scenic wetlands of the Suwanee Creek Park. Three miles of boardwalks wind their way through this area, which teems with frogs, turtles, and fish. The 9.5-mile Suwanee Greenway starts in this park.

Looking for a little more elevation in your stay? If you’re planning your Duluth RV rental during the winter months, consider making the drive to one of the several ski resorts around the area. In the warmer months, Stone Mountain is just 40 minutes away. Home to the Confederate Memorial Carving, the biggest high relief sculpture in the world, Stone Mountain offers a number of scenic views and hiking trails. If you’re planning on spending the night in the area, be sure to get tickets to the mountain’s Lasershow Spectacular—featuring lasers, lights, music, and fireworks, along with three flame cannons, which shoot fire nearly 100 feet up into the sky. You can see some parts of the show for miles around, and it is not to be missed.

Though you’re not going to be able to find any RV parks inside Duluth itself, there is a number of prime locations nearby. Jones RV Park is just 15 minutes away in Norcross, and in Cumming you’ll find Twin Lakes Park & RV and Wesley Oaks RV Park. These are both 20 minutes to half an hour away. Duluth also has a Walmart right next to Shorty Howell Park.

If you’re still fired up about Stone Mountain, though, you can also head over to the Stone Mountain Park Campground once you get your RV rental in Duluth. This offers over 200 RV sites in beautiful hardwood forests, complete with creeks and stunning hikes. The campground runs bingo games Friday nights all summer long, and ice cream socials every Saturday.

During your stay, don’t forget to check out Duluth itself! It’s a fantastic city to rent an RV in. Just 10 minutes from downtown Duluth, for instance, you can check out the McDaniel Farm Park, a restored historical time capsule of a typical 1930s farm in Gwinnett County. This area has a proud agricultural heritage, and the McDaniel Farm has a farmhouse, barn, blacksmith shed, and more. You’ll also find something similar over at the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve & Heritage Center in Johns Creek. This area offers yet another chance to get in touch with Gwinnett County’s past. The Heritage Village is made up of 46 acres, including seven buildings and a large pole barn, demonstrating common rural life in this area from the mid-19th to mid-20th century. You’ll also find an overlook and an abandoned gold mine, plus the foundation stones for the old mill. This preserve also has 2.5 miles of trails, winding over and around bridges, creeks, spring seeps, and fields of wildflowers.

If you’re looking to stay closer to the heart of the city, be sure to head over to the Southeastern Railway Museum, Georgia’s official transportation museum. They have a robust collection of vintage locomotives, rolling stock, buses and taxicabs, along with railroad memorabilia and historical collections from throughout the ages. Also don’t miss out on your chance to see a game at the Infinite Energy Arena—home to the Atlanta Gladiators, Georgia Swarm, and Atlanta Steam. This is all an extension of the Gwinnett Center, a haven for local performing arts!

Downtown Duluth also has a thriving community center, home to an annual Fall Festival the last weekend of September. This is right next to the Town Green, which showcases tons of concerts and movies throughout the year, as well as a spectacular outdoor amphitheater, park, and public fountain. If you’re coming with kids, Taylor Park has a fantastic train-themed playground, complete with a mini train depot and train set with everything from a caboose to a steam engine. Kids will also love the West Gwinnett Park Aquatic Center, which features water slides and a lazy river.
