Dalton is a small city in northwestern Georgia state, in the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills. It is the county seat of Whitfield County. It saw some action in the U.S. Civil War and has monuments honoring those events. Book an RV in Whitfield County to begin your exploration of the history and countryside of this friendly little destination. Other places you can go sightseeing are Ringgold, Chatsworth, Calhoun, Fairmount and Jasper.

Dalton is hot and humid in the summer, mild to cool in the winter; travelers headed here during the summer should expect a slow, relaxing vacation. This is a perfect excuse for getting into the groove; nothing says Georgia like sipping lemonade (or ice tea, or wine) under the awning of your luxury RV rental in Dalton.

The Great Outdoors

Johns Mountain Wildlife Management Area is a good place to start discovering the area. It has moderate hiking up to a peak where you can clearly see the surrounding countryside and there are trails for mountain bikers and horseback riding. Fishing is allowed, as is hunting (deer, black bear, turkey, and small game), but ATVs and other motorized off-road vehicles are not allowed on these lands. Picnic sites and shelters are available for public use; bring along your Dalton camper rental and prepare lunch in style while enjoying the picnic tables and scenery.

Chattahoochee National Forest is east of Dalton and a part of the greater Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests. The expanse of land consists of 867,00 acres of undisturbed nature, thousands of miles of rivers and streams, 850 miles of forest trails and more. Not just natural scenery, these forests are historical and cultural treasures under the protection of the USDA Forest Service. Passes may be required, depending on where you plan to go; check with the nearest Ranger District Office to find out if a visitor's pass is required.

Visitors who enjoy being outdoors but don't enjoy the mosquitoes should check out Heritage Point Regional Park, a recreation area with softball and baseball fields, disc golf, a playground and an area for dogs. The picnic areas have grills and there is a concession stand.

RV Parks

Choosing any of these sites as the landing spot for your RV rental near Dalton, GA, is the first step in guaranteeing a relaxing holiday.

Exploring The City

It isn't everyone's cup of tea, but visitors interested in the history of Dalton, especially in relation to the Civil War, should visit the local cemetery. There is an on-site chapel and staff are available to answer questions. It is a good place to take a walk or walk your pet, or just sit and watch the sun rise or set.

The Whitfield-Murray Historical Society is another good venue for exploring Dalton's history. It is housed in the crown cotton mill's former executive offices and it is one of several historic homes and sites in the area managed by the Historical Society. Exhibits change frequently and it details the local history of cotton mills, chenille, and chair and rug manufacturing, as well as the Civil War.

Enthusiasts looking for a different take on local history can check out the local flea markets or take a walking tour of the city. One of the more popular routes is a ghost and vampire tour, but there are also tours focusing on the city's architecture. Real or imagined, Dalton is an interesting city no matter where your interests lay. Be sure to schedule in some time to relax in your Dalton camper rental.

Once you have walked off lunch (or breakfast), Dalton has something few (or no) other cities have: the Dalton Freight Depot. Yes, it's true that many cities have rail depots for commercial or pedestrian traffic, but not like this. The inside of Dalton Freight Depot serves as a visitor information center with changing exhibits, a coffee shop and restaurant, and a place to relax and watch trains go by, and who doesn't enjoy that?

For those who like to dine in quieter venues, Dalton has a wide array of cuisines and eating establishments to choose from, such as Mexican, Japanese, southwestern and more. There are a few chain restaurants to keep the kids happy; or, customers can grocery shop at any of the local grocery stores before heading back to their RV rental near Dalton for a nice home cooked meal, relished under a starlit Georgia sky.
