Sitting right on the border of DelawarePennsylvania, Claymont, DE is a melting pot of culture, outdoor activities, and friendly locals. The town can be found just down the road from Wilmington and Philadelphia, and on the shores of the Delaware River, meaning it is incredibly accessible, no matter where you are coming from.

It’s location on the confluence of Interstate 95 and 495 means this town has been used by travelers going from Washington to Philadelphia for years. Amazingly, there is evidence of this area being settled as long ago as 1600 B.C, with the town being named after the Lenape chief who occupied the area at that time.

With a deep-rooted history, countless green parks and the Delaware River running close by, this will be an exciting destination for you to start your outdoor family adventure!

Discover Claymont

The Great Outdoors

What better way to discover the great outdoors than in a motorhome rental from Claymont.

Bellevue State Park is a popular pastime for both locals and visitors to the area. Overlooking the Delaware River, this park offers visitors both water and land activities to make the most out of the great outdoors. Engage in activities such as tennis, fishing, hiking, walking, disc golf, and so much more! You can even take out a bike, free of charge, from the park office! William Du Pont originally owned the estate and was the man responsible for curating the extravagant garden decorations that you will witness. You can visit at any time of year, but the gardens are particularly beautiful during spring whilst the foliage is in full bloom.

Nemours Estate and Gardens offer a similar grandeur with a more Parisian feel to them. Owned by another Du Pont brother, there is a 77-room mansion, the largest formal French gardens in North America as well as a huge garage housing a collection of vintage cars that were once used on the estate. Guided tours are available, but exploring the grounds at your own pace is a much better way not to miss what lies behind every nook and cranny!

Another park that was once the property of the Du Pont’s is Brandywine Creek State Park. Unlike the previous estates, this park was exclusively used for leisure and farming. Today, you can still see the original grey stonewalls used to divide the cattle in the early 1800’s. Make sure to look out for the Tulip Tree Woods and the Freshwater Marsh, both unique features of the park.

RV Parks

When you book a travel trailer in Claymont, you will find that some of the best options for parking your RV may actually be found closer to Wilmington or Philadelphia.

Heading back towards Philadelphia, you will come across Campus Park and Ride. Although very basic in its appearance, it is the only urban RV park in the inner suburbs and has all of the facilities one could wish for. 24-hour gate access and WiFi are provided.

Delaware Motel and RV Park is located just the other side of Wilmington and is the only RV Park in the area. This campground offers full hookups for your RV, although there are no other facilities. This park is best used as a quick stopover or for a power nap!

If you find yourself needing a quick overnight stop, consider Walmart. There is a Walmart located less than five miles of town in Boothwyn, PA and overnight camping may be allowed at this location. Just go in and check with the manager before you park your Claymont camper rental for the night.

Exploring the City

Despite being a small town, there are plenty of city-based attractions to keep your mind entertained! The parks and estates mentioned have impressive buildings that are worth exploring, mainly for the historical connotations. Other notable historical sites include the Claymont Stone School and Caleb Pusey House. Both are historical buildings built in the 19th century. Take yourself on a self-guided tour or book one of the guided tours for a more informative visit.

Brandywine Zoo is a great day activity for the whole family! Found within Brandywine Park, this small zoo features animals from across several different continents including the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, and even the Pacific Islands. Park your luxury motorhome rental from Claymont here and let the kids loose for an amazing learning experience!

Perhaps a more adult-friendly activity is indulging in a day of wine tasting on the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail. This guided tour takes you on a historical journey of wine production in the valley. Free wine tastings are available well as the chance to buy bottles for you to enjoy or take home and give as gifts.

If you are searching for a vacation destination with a little more of the great outdoors, consider a camper rental in Claymont. Enjoy learning about the areas history, take photos of the fascinating estates, and take in the jaw-dropping landscape! Rent an RV rental in Claymont, DE and explore The Diamond State!
