New Milford is a sprawling town along the banks of the Housatonic River. It’s just a short drive away from its larger neighbor, Danbury. The first Anglo-American settlers arrived in 1707, and the town was created a few short year later in 1712. The town was played an instrumental part in the American Revolution, sending over 280 men to fight the Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, and Battle of Monmouth.

The seaport city of Bridgeport is located around 30 miles to the south. Waterbury may be found around 30 miles to the east. The states third largest city, Stanford, lies approximately 45 minutes south.

This sleepy suburban town near the rolling Litchfield hills may not seem like a hot destination, but it actually predates the United States as a country and has plenty to offer travelers. New Milford’s main attraction, though, is the sheer number of parks, forests, and lakes nearby. Rent a motorhome in New Milford and set out to see the grandeur of New England’s nature hot spots, with a stopover in town to enjoy the local life.

Discover New Milford

The Great Outdoors

The best thing about renting an RV rental in New Milford is that you’re near plenty of great locations for camping and hiking. Lovers Leap State Park is a local favorite, with crisscrossing trails through lush forests and stunning views of the surrounding region. When wandering in these woods, you’ll stumble upon the picturesque 1895 Berlin Iron Bridge, the ruins of a castle, and other surprises!

Another of New Milford’s best features is Candlewood Lake. This manmade lake is the largest in the state, surrounded by beautiful woodlands. While camping is prohibited here, it’s a great place to spend a day playing in the water. Try your hand at water skiing, tubing, or boarding!

Take a trip to the Pratt Nature Center, a 205-acre wildlife preserve that puts on awesome educational activities for people of all ages. Enjoy hiking, do some bird-watching, or interact with some farm animals. If you’re traveling with the kids, it’s worthwhile to check out their upcoming events and join in on the fun!

RV Parks

When you book an RV in New Milford, you will possibly need a place to park during your adventure. While there may not be a ton of RV specific parks located around town, many of the public campsites at the state parks, like nearby Macedonia Brook State Park, have basic RV hookups. You won’t have the amenities of a private RV park, but they all come with idyllic natural settings to spend a few days in. Or pick up a camper rental in New Milford and head to Lake Waramaug State Park for something a little more developed, with features like a swimming pool and food concession.

Just a little to the Northeast, towards the town of Litchfield, you’ll find several great private RV parks. Should you be seeking amenities for your New Milford RV rental, Cozy Hills Campground offers a variety of RV hookups, an arcade, and an in-ground swimming pool. It’s also just a few minutes away from Mt. Tom State Park and Bantam Lake.

If you’re on the go, RV camping overnight is also allowed at rest stops throughout the state. The nearest one that has a dump station is in Danbury, but you won’t find hookups for your RV there. That said, it’s a free and relatively safe place to stay, with bathrooms on site. Another option to consider is Walmart. There is one located in town, and overnight camping may be allowed at this location. Just hop in and check with the manager before you bunk down for the night.

Exploring the City

Once you’ve picked up your New Milford travel trailer rental, take some time to explore the town itself. The city center has a few treats to offer intrepid visitors, including a variety of delicious foods. There is a mix of Thai, Japanese, or choose from a whole variety of Italian restaurants if you’re feeling like something exotic. You are also able to find restaurants that have turned organic farming into dining, with cooking classes in an authentic farm setting.

Make a stop at one of New Milford’s flea markets, especially its oversized and wildly popular weekend market, where you are able to pick up all kinds of souvenirs, from antiques to plants. People come from all around the state to shop here. You can go on a treasure hunt through the stalls and negotiate for a steal. The market even has its own food trucks! There is even room in the parking lot for your luxury motorhome rental from New Milford.

If history is more your style, visit one of the local museums. Learn all about the town’s lengthy history at the New Milford Historical Society and Museum. The museum features some beautiful antiques and tons of information about both New Milford and Connecticut. Just a few miles away, in Washington, you can visit the Institute for American Indian Studies. The large property has a medicinal garden and a recreation of a 16th century Algonkian village that you can explore to get a feel for what life would have been like in this area hundreds of years ago.

Should you be seeking a quaint, charming Connecticut town, consider renting a motorhome in New Milford. Enjoy the day at a museum, watch a sunset, sit by the campfire and take in the majestic landscape. Rent an RV in New Milford, CT and go explore The Constitution State.
