The small city of New London in Connecticut is a charming seaport known for its strategic importance and its fascinating history. At one point in time, the port of New London was one of the busiest whaling hubs in the entire world, and the wealth from this industry spurred the growth of New London, helping it blossom into a vibrant, decadent city with gorgeous architecture and lovely views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Before the arrival of Europeans, the Pequot native people called the land that New London now sits on by the name of Nameaug. Both Nameaug and Faire Harbour were considered by citizens when voting on the town’s name before they finally settled on honoring the capital of England and calling it New London.

When you book an RV in New London, you won’t be in the largest city or the capital of Connecticut, but you will be in one of the most unique and wonderful places in the entire northeastern United States. The city streets are graced with beautiful trees, historic homes, old military forts lining the Thames River, and amazing waterfront views and walking areas. Getting to the state capital of Hartford, or Boston, the largest city in the northeast, is a breeze when you rent an RV, and finding a great place to enjoy the great outdoors in Connecticut is part of the fun, with lots of excellent parks to choose from.

Discover New London

The Great Outdoors

The Connecticut shoreline sits adjacent to the Long Island Sound, an extension of the Atlantic Ocean and a fabulous place to spend the summer. There are quite a few places to check out if you want to explore the great outdoors in Connecticut, particularly in the more sparsely populated parts of the state of eastern Connecticut. Haley Farm State Park and Bluff Point State Park are two of the best parks located over in Groton, linked together by a small bridge walking path. You can head to either of the two parks, featuring a bevy of nature trails that weave through tranquil wooded areas, intermixed with small ponds and streams. Haley Farm State Park was once a colonial-era farm built over 100 years before the American Revolution took place. Bluff Point State Park is right next to the water, with stunning beachfront views and rocky bluffs overlooking the Long Island Sound.

Rocky Neck State Park is one of the state’s most popular parks in the summertime, bringing in people from all over New England to enjoy a beach day or two while beating the heat. You can swim in the ocean, walk around tidal marshes and other delicate ecosystems, go fishing in the ocean or saltwater lagoons or visit the park’s interpretive center which has lots of information concerning the ecosystem and the park’s wildlife. There are well over 100 camping sites that you can use when you need a place to stay with your New London camper rental.

Pachaug State Forest is another wonderful place to consider when you rent an RV in Connecticut, as it is the largest forest in the state and one of the best places to reconnect with nature. This National Natural Landmark is crucial for several species of tree, most notably the Atlantic white cedar tree. The Pachaug, Nehantic, Narragansett, and Quinebaug trails enable visitors to hike miles and miles through jaw-dropping, scenic natural areas. There is even a 58-mile enduro motorcycle trail for off-road speed enthusiasts, though there is nowhere to camp with your New London motorhome rental in the forest.
