Jamestown sits about halfway between Boulder, one of America’s most famous college towns, and the Peak to Peak Highway, a nationally-designated scenic byway that runs parallel to the state’s Front Range mountains. It’s a fairly small town, consisting of just a few houses and a post office, but it’s what lies in the surrounding mountains that make this a must see next time you rent an RV.

For much of Jamestown’s history, it was a mining town, with gold being the primary mineral extracted starting in the mid-19th century. For the next several decades it was a boomtown who’s fortunes rested on the high price of gold and luck of young men in finding it. In the 1890s and 1960s, there were notable floods that wreaked havoc on the town. A final flood almost completed wiped it out several years ago, so what you see today is actually a reconstruction of the town, relocated to prevent floodwaters from reaching it in the future.

The Great Outdoors

When you get a camper rental in Jamestown you can be certain that there will be plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Being nestled into the mountains as it is, you’re literally surrounded by excellent trails heading up to some of Colorado’s most majestic peaks. Given the high elevation of many of these locations, it’s a good idea to take a day to acclimate to the thinner air before embarking on any serious aerobic activity.

For a big adventure check out Nugget Hill; the Nugget Hill Trail is a fairly strenuous hike being quite steep and with a few rocky sections, but most hikers agree the views are worth it. The trail is 4.4 miles out-and-back and has just over 1,600 feet of elevation gain.

However, if you’re looking for something closer to town, Buckingham Park is just a few miles away. This park has some short hiking trails that offer access to picnic areas and to the tranquil Lefthand Creek. Dogs are also allowed in the park but must stay on-leash. A little farther away is the Ceran Saint Vrain Trail located in Roosevelt National Forest, this mostly flat path is 3.5 miles round-trip, perfect for a leisurely day hike. It’s also open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and dogs are allowed (including off-leash).

RV Parks near Jamestown

The closest place to camp when you choose an RV rental in Jamestown is Camp Dick, just off the Peak to Peak Highway. Sites there are fairly primitive with no RV hookups or showers, but there are vault toilets and drinking water is available for visitors looking for rustic accommodations. There are a couple of great mountain biking trails close by and horseback riding excursions are offered from a nearby lodge. Another option for no hookup camping is Pawnee Campground in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area. It also has toilets and drinking water, but no other amenities.

For full-service RV parks you’ll need to drive all the way to Longmont to stay at the Countrywood Inn and RV Park. They have full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry facilities. This is a solid choice if you’re not a fan of camping in the wilderness with no amenities.

With manager permission, you could also camp at the Walmart in Longmont when you get a motorhome rental in Jamestown. There also won’t be any amenities there, but it is conveniently located near some major highways. Additionally, most of the truck stops with dump stations and large fuel bays are located close by on Interstate 25.

Exploring the Town of Jamestown

One of the best things to do on a rainy day in Jamestown is to check out the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center. There you can learn all about the culture and history of Northern Colorado and the cast of characters that made it what it is today. There’s also the Dougherty Museum in Longmont, which houses a large collection of antique automobiles and other vehicles. Be aware that that the hours do change, so be sure to check before venturing out to it.

Being just outside of Boulder, Jamestown lies at the heart of Colorado’s famed craft beer scene and a DIY brewery tour is a perfect way to experience it. With several breweries located in neighboring towns, there will be plenty to choose from. Make a list of them, see if any of them have one of your favorite styles on tap and enjoy. Just be sure to leave your travel trailer rental in Jamestown and find a designated driver to take you home.

Both the nearby towns of Allenspark and Lyons offer some prime souvenir and art shopping opportunities. Gift shops, local galleries, and other specialty stores sell all kinds of local products that will be fun to take home (or just fun to look at).
