Despite its small population, Willows is the county seat of Glenn County in northern California. Willows was once called Willow, and it is unknown why the change was made to the town’s name.

This lively little town can be found right off of Interstate 5 just a few short hours’ drive from Sacramento, and a half hour's drive outside of Chico. The rich history of this small city, its favorable Mediterranean climate, its ideal location, and its proximity to regional city hubs make for a solid vacation spot as well as a great place to rent an RV.

When you book an RV in Willows, the heavenly mountains of the Sierra Nevada and all the natural glory that comes with it is so close you can feel it. The mountains are blanketed with lush evergreen forests and intoxicatingly beautiful national parks, so nature lovers will always find something to love while visiting the area.

Experience the Great Outdoors

It would be quite an impressive feat to visit Willows, California while avoiding any sort of nature, as there are too many nature parks and recreation areas in the area to name. Black Butte Recreation Area comes to mind as a solid place to bring your Willows camper rental once you arrive in town and get comfortable. The stunning Black Butte Lake has little vegetation surrounding it, making it look like a water-filled crater on a distant planet. There are plenty of hiking trails circling the lake, and some excellent swimming areas, beaches, and campgrounds where you can park your Willows RV rental. Lake Oroville is another regional favorite for both locals and tourists, as it holds nearly a dozen different recreation areas on its shores. Loafers Creek, Potters Ravine, Foreman Creek, and Kelly Ridge are all recreation areas with scenic campgrounds overlooking the water, so a visit to this massive lake should definitely be considered.

Mendocino National Forest is located west of Willows, and its headquarters are coincidentally located in Willows too. This enchanting forest is located in the Coastal Mountain Range of California, with desolate stretches of wilderness, epic backcountry trekking, lofty mountain vistas, and a number of lakes and rivers where you can swim, boat, or fish. Like most national forests, this sprawling, 900,000-acre stretch of land is full of camping spots for you to make use of when you rent an RV.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is a sublime experience through and through, with epic scenery and geological activity to boot. The park is one of the only places in the world that feature the four major types of volcano. Plug dome volcanoes, shield volcanoes, cinder cones, and stratovolcanoes are scattered throughout the park, as well as a variety of mud pots and hot springs. On top of all that, you can camp at the park in your Willows camper rental, or visit the museum near Manzanita Lake.

RV Parks

It can be an absolute breeze to find a relaxing place to camp out when you rent an RV near Willows, so don’t put too much thought into that part of the trip's planning. Depending on what you like, there are a handful of places to look into, like Willows RV Park. City Attractions

Willows doesn’t have the number of attractions that major cities like Sacramento and San Francisco are known for, but this doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t fun to be had when you rent an RV in the small city. A stroll around the heart of Willows will yield some lovely scenery, manicured landscapes, dining spots, small shops, and lots of historical buildings. The Willows Museum is a fascinating place housed in an old Carnegie Library, which is a work of art in its own right. The museum’s front facade is adorned with Greek columns and ornate architectural detail, and there is much to learn inside. Old photographs, memorabilia, and antiques decorate the hall, and there are knowledgeable tour guides on site to help guests understand the intricacies of the town’s proud history.

Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge is located in Willows, despite its name. Tourists enjoy making a visit to this refuge where they can fully appreciate the work that goes into rehabilitating injured birds of prey, and other migratory birds too.

For a literal change of pace, Thunderhill Raceway Park is an appropriate place to check out. This small intimate track is great for getting up close and personal to local races; you can walk among the pit, watch from the front of the grandstand, or even race around the track at certain designated times. You can rent the track out for events, eat at the full-service cafe, or shop at the wonderful pro shop.
