A two-hour drive north of San Francisco and the bustling Silicon Valley is a place that seems an entire world away, wine country. While most visitors to California are more familiar with Napa Valley and the communities just north of the Bay Area, even farther north is a less touristy version of it in the town of Ukiah. Small in size and surrounded by magnificent scenery, this is the perfect place for a relaxing vacation. When you book an RV in Ukiah to explore California’s Wine Country, you may just find it to be a more flexible and affordable alternative to booking a room in places like Napa.

If you’re hoping to get into the Bay Area during your Ukiah RV rental vacation, it is technically possible to do so with public transportation. Amtrak runs from Ukiah to the city of Martinez, where you can link up with the city transit system. However, this will likely take four hours or more, so it would probably need to be an overnight trip. Parking your Ukiah travel trailer rental in San Francisco may prove to be quite a challenge, so this might be one of the best options for getting around the Bay Area with ease.

Getting Outside near Ukiah

The scenic valleys of Northern California are a paradise for nature lovers and you won’t need to travel too far with your Ukiah camper rental to experience them. If you just need a place to lay out a picnic blanket or let the kids run off some energy, Todd Grove Park on the town’s western edge is the perfect place to do it. During the summer there’s also a city pool where you can cool off. Half an hour’s drive to the north, Montgomery Woods State Reserve offers miles of great hiking trails. Of course, if you’re hoping to hit the links, 18 holes at the local golf course might be just what you need.

Point Reyes National Seashore is about 100 miles from Ukiah and is the best place to experience Northern California’s beaches. While hiking, wildlife viewing, and kayaking are some of the most popular activities there, yoga and educational programs are occasionally offered during the summer months. The mid-19thcentury Point Reyes Lighthouse is also a major attraction, with its striking setting on the rocky coast being a favorite among photographers.

RV Parks near Ukiah

There aren’t too many RV parks within Ukiah or even anywhere very close to town. One of the closest RV parks is actually the within Ukiah’s fairgrounds; the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds Vacation RV Park has hookups and a dump station.

One of the nearest parks with a more expansive offering of amenities is Golden Rule RV Park, to the north on Route 101. The park has electrical hookups, laundry facilities, and a pool, so it may be worth driving a little farther with your Ukiah motorhome rental.

Another option is Blue Lakes Village RV Park, 20 miles to the east and on the shore of Blue Lakes. It offers full hookups, laundry, but most importantly, boat rentals for use on the lake. There is a country store nearby, so you won’t feel too isolated and can still pick up the necessities if you need to. Aurora RV Park and Marina is a little farther down the road on Clear Lake, the state’s largest freshwater lake. All of their sites have full hookups, and kayaks and canoes are available for paddling around. If you just need a place to park, there is a Walmart in the center of Ukiah, where you might be able to stay a night or two.

Exploring the Town of Ukiah

Undoubtedly one of the most common reasons to rent an RV in Ukiah is to do a vineyard tour (or two). There are multiple vineyards close by that offer tastings and a walkthrough of the winemaking process. If your experience with wine has never progressed before “red or white” this is your chance to branch out and broaden your horizons.

In addition to all those vineyards, Ukiah has also been famous as a hops growing region. While outshined in its hops production by regions in Washington State, Ukiah has a couple of breweries to showcase its bitter export.

However if all that alcohol has you seeking some physical and spiritual cleansing, a visit to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas might well be in order. While operating as a full functional monastery where adherents live and meditate, it’s also open to the public to educate and help them to connect with the Buddhist faith.

If you’re interested in the history of Ukiah though, the Grace Hudson Museum is a great place to dive in deep. It’s fairly small but the exhibits range from fascinating works by the namesake artist to Native American pieces showcasing the area’s rich cultural past.
