Sunol is a city in Alameda County, California, which was first established in the mid-1800s. It began as a ranching community but soon after, disappointed gold miners settled down in the area to become farmers. The railroad arrived around the late 1800s, making Sunol an easy access point for those traveling to San Jose. A water temple was designed and constructed around 1906, adding tourism to Sunol's agricultural-based economy. Summer homes were constructed around 1925 and continued as rental properties until World War II when a housing shortage in the Livermore-Amador Valley forced residents to relocate. Throughout its history, many historical buildings have been destroyed by fires, although some have been reconstructed. In 1981, a fiercely contested county election led to voters submitting write-in ballots electing Bosco, a Labrador retriever, honorary mayor; Bosco remained mayor until his death in 1994. A Chinese newspaper in 1990 used Sunol's situation as an example of America's failings but the citizens continued to support Bosco and named a local pub in his honor. Bosco's remains are mounted in the saloon, where he continues to serve the public.
Book an RV in Alameda County and you are ready to embark on an adventure you will not soon forget. Some other notable towns and cities not far away are also worth investigating and spending some time in. Pleasanton was the backdrop for a Hollywood movie filmed in 1917. Livermore has a periodic table element, livermorium, named after it. Milpitas has many streets, schools, and parks which are named after the families of the city's first settlers. Fremont has a public arts program as part of its effort to encourage art appreciation. Union City's city council in 2017 unanimously declared the city a compassionate city. Your Sunol RV trailer rental is your passport to visiting these places and others.
Garin Regional Park is a dry creek preserve hosting a variety of recreational activities, from hiking and dog walking to picnicking, kite flying, and nature studies. An extensive supply of unpaved trails invites visitors to enjoy cycling and horseback riding. Anglers can make use of the Jordan Pond Pier to fish for bluegill, sunfish, and large-mouth bass (a state fishing license is required). Keep your Sunol motorhome rental close by for when its time to clean and refrigerate your catch.
Del Valle Regional Park is a lake open for recreational activities, surrounded by hills covered with oak tree stands. Visitors to the park can enjoy sailing and boating, windsurfing, swimming, and much more. Camping is allowed and guests are invited to participate in the educational programs being offered (some merely one day rather than ongoing). Trails in the surrounding woods provide an opportunity for hiking, nature viewing, and photography.
Prior to becoming a park, Sunol Regional Wilderness was ranch land for almost a century. Cattle still graze in this multi-use park which is now open to the public for hiking and backpacking, camping and picnicking, and more. Sunol naturalist staff lead hikes, coordinate special events, and even teach natural and cultural history to students attending on school trips. Visitors will discover fossil imprints in sandstone outcrops, greenstone, schist and metachert boulders, and basalt outcrops suitable for rock climbers.
There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds nearby; some of these may be a combination of RV park and mobile home park. Some may have tent camping too. Your Sunol travel trailer rental will complement these destinations, combining to provide you with a relaxing and comfortable vacation.
The Fairpark RV Campground is a basic RV park with full hookups, gated access, and Wi-Fi. It is located inside Alameda County Fairgrounds and has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and a covered picnic area.
Candlestick RV Park has daily, weekly, and monthly rates, and is very close to many popular tourist attractions; a shuttle bus can take you from the park to any of these destinations. It has restrooms and showers, and laundry facilities; individual sites have full hookups. There is some tent camping within the park.
There is so much to do in Sunol that one vacation may not be enough. History buffs should check out the museums, one of which hosts exhibits from other museums and occasionally sponsors visiting artists to talk about their work. They should also check out a mission in San Jose that is a historical site reflecting California's history and has an attached cemetery where many of the city's founders were laid to rest. Another museum focuses on silent films. There are numerous vineyards and wineries, as well as art galleries. If you have time (a big “if”), take your Sunol RV rental for a run on one of the local highways (you can't do this with a hotel room, can you?).
Restaurant selections in and near Sunol start with steak and seafood, pizzerias, and Mexican and Italian establishments, and continue with Mediterranean and French food, bistros, and much, much more. One Italian restaurant has salmon pasta on the menu; if you dine here, be sure to try the lava cake. One of the steakhouses has an extensive menu which includes a smoked bone-in ribeye. Be sure to order the prosciutto-wrapped shrimp for an appetizer. Portions are big so don't be ashamed if you can't eat it all; take the leftovers home to your Sunol luxury RV rental for a late night snack or for lunch the next day.
