Solvang is one of several Californian towns and cities located in Santa Barbara County, along with Santa Ynez, Lompoc, and Santa Maria. It was first established in 1910, when Danish immigrants who originally immigrated to Iowa, moved to what would later become Santa Ynez Valley and purchased the land Solvang now resides on. It was not officially incorporated until 1985, making it a relatively new city with a long history.

Danish culture is therefore obviously intertwined with this city, as evidenced in its architecture, educational systems, and philosophies. Danish Days is celebrated in September and festival goers dress up in traditional Danish clothing and eat traditional Danish food. The holiday centers around a parade through the downtown core, with floats, marching bands, folk dancers and singers, and other marching participants. The 700-seat open-air Solvang Festival Theater, built in 1974, was the end result of a very successful performance of Hamlet, in Solvang's town park, in 1971. Solvang's claim to fame also includes two visits by Danish royalty.

Visitors to Solvang generally arrive by car or by bus, after disembarking from trains arriving in nearby Santa Barbara. RV enthusiasts can arrange to pick up their Solvang camper rental upon arriving.

Discover Solvang

The Great Outdoors

Solvang, at an elevation of 500 ft above sea level, occupies a total area of 2.4 square miles. Days here are warm and with clear skies; nights are cool but not cold, making it an ideal place to rent an RV. Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge is about 100 miles from Solvang, but every bit worth the trip. Bring your Solvang RV rental with you and make it an overnight adventure. Better yet, continue on from Bitter Creek deeper into Los Padres National Forest to the town of Ojala, where you can visit Matilija Hot Springs or go hiking along Cozy Dell Trailhead. Continue south to take the breathtaking vista at Cozy Dell Canyon and complete the loop arriving back at Solvang.

East of Solvang, nature lovers can go fishing at Cachuma Lake Recreation Area or rent a kayak. Camping spots are available for those who decide to extend their visit. Southeast of Solvang and just west of Santa Barbara, the Campus Point State Marine Conservation Area holds interest for those who prefer to study fish rather than pan fry them. Continuing west along U.S. Highway 101, there is a second environmentally protected zone, Naples State Marine Conservation Area.

Sun worshipers can visit Refugio State Beach or El Capitan State Beach, both along the 101. El Capitan has sites where you can park your Solvang rental motorhome and a small convenience store.

RV Parks

Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground has an on-site convenience store, Wi-Fi & a shuttle bus to a nearby casino. Exploring The City

When you book an RV in Solvang, there is so much to do here. Visitors will have more difficulty deciding what not to do. Solvang is very close to some farms and ranches where guests can go horseback riding, around the yard or out into the wilderness. In town, Solvang's horse-drawn streetcars are both a pleasure to ride in and a necessary photo-op. There are over 100 vineyards and wineries near Solvang, where guests can sample the wines and even finish their visit with an on-site luxury meal, wine included of course.

Sports enthusiasts can rent bicycles and take a cycling tour of Solvang's countryside, through the rolling hills and even farther out into the national parks. There are ostrich and miniature horse farms that will entertain adults as well as children, and it may be one of the few locations where visitors (who have never done this before) can try their hand at riding a Segway. Sunny Fields Park has everything a child might want to see and do, while Solvang's boutique shops and museums will satisfy the parents’ needs and curiosities. It has numerous old missionaries that will add a touch of history to a visitor's trip.

The town has its share of pub restaurants for those who prefer something stronger than wine. Foodies will not be disappointed, as there is the usual wide variety of cuisines to choose from, as well as vineyards that have their own on-site cafes, and farms and ranches that serve up meals straight from the garden to the table. Dining here would not be complete without trying an authentic Danish meal at least one evening.

When dinner is finished and the night is still young, a slow stroll around the town will reveal theater and music to perfectly conclude a perfect day.
