Originally called Bay City, Seal Beach had to change its name since there was already a city in California with that name. So, even though the seals it was named after no longer inhabit the waters around this charming town, the name stuck. Near the famed beach cities of Long Beach and Huntington Beach, Seal Beach is a great place to base your Southern California adventures. The local Chamber of Commerce hosts a huge Christmas Parade in December, and the Fish Fry in July is one of the biggest events in the area. This quiet community is a perfect seaside destination, filled with hometown appeal and quiet neighborhoods. It’s also a great place for kitesurfing, building sandcastles and windsurfing. Start your SoCal adventures, and book an RV in Seal Beach, CA.

Discover Seal Beach

Sites and Scenery

Seal Beach prides itself on its extensive park system made up of nearly 20 parks, including a tennis center, community centers, an aquatics facility and a gymnasium. You’ll find great places to picnic and relax on or near the beach.

A favorite spot is the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge. Within its 900+ acres, there are remnants of a saltwater marsh in the Anaheim Bay estuary. This is a wonderful place for a hike, or to see some endangered species of birds like the light-footed Ridgway’s rail, the Savannah sparrow or the California least tern. This valuable habitat has become more and more important for migrating and wintering shorebirds, seabirds and many species of waterfowl. Access is usually limited to guided tours, so call or check online in advance.

Gum Grove Nature Park is another popular spot for hiking, walking the pup, catching amazing spring wildflower blooms, and bird watching. There are spots for picnicking and pretty views in every direction. Right next to the Los Cerritos Wetlands, the hiking trail is perfect for beginners and families with small children. Insect repellent is recommended.

Love to surf, or want to learn how? Seal Beach is a great place to go. There are several surfing spots near Seal Beach, including near the Seal Beach Pier, and the mouth of San Gabriel River. This spot is nicknamed “Stingray Bay,” or “Ray Bay,” since the stingrays are attracted to the water that’s heated by upstream power plants. Classic longboard builders are based in this area, so you know it’s a great surfing spot.

Drive your Seal Beach rental RV to visit Crystal Cove State Park, about 20 miles south of the city. The views will absolutely take your breath away, and the three-mile sandy beach means you usually stay away from crowds while you explore fragile tide pools, hiking and bicycling trails, or you can even camp here (reservations recommended). The water is crystal clear and clean and on a hot summer day, refreshing and a great and safe place to swim.

A trip with an RV rental near Seal Beach, CA, is not complete without a trek to Griffith Park, right in the middle of the metropolis of Los Angeles. Home of its famous zoo and the Griffith Observatory that you might recognize from the movies, this park also offers over 4,200 acres of urban wilderness areas. Enjoy a wide variety of trail experiences, from super-easy to more difficult. Griffith Park also features landscaped parkland and peaceful picnic areas. You won’t believe that you’re in the city limits in this beautiful park, a true Los Angeles icon, and for good reason. There are deep canyons, and flora that are only found in this part of California, like certain oak, sumac, and walnut trees.

Back in town, make sure to take your bike along the San Gabriel River Bike Trail. You’ll see and experience breathtaking scenery and wildlife, including mountain and ocean views.

City Sites

You’ll love the over 100 local shops on tree-lined Main Street Seal Beach. Businesses include unique apparel stores, children’s clothing boutiques, antiques, art galleries, and gifts. There are also several wonderful eateries and drinking spots. Twice a year, hit the sidewalk sale organized by the local Chamber of Commerce. One of the more popular attractions in the area, the sale is like a craft show, community fair and fun shopping day, all wrapped up into one big event.

Seal Beach boasts one of the longest wooden piers in California. You’ll see anglers of all ages trying for a catch. Fishing from a public pier is allowed in California; certain limitations apply, including catch size and number. Easy parking is available for the Seal Beach RV rental, and you’ll see families taking advantage of the cool ocean breezes while strolling up and down this gorgeous pier. Nearby there are tons of restaurants and bars, so you can really make an evening of it by catching a sunset from the pier, followed by an exquisite dinner.

Don’t miss the Red Car Museum, where the railroad tracks used to run on Electric Avenue. You’ll see a lovingly restored Pacific Electric Railway car, as well as the trolley tracks that once passed right through the center of Seal Beach.

Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Site was originally built as part of the Spanish land grant of 1784. This living history museum features six restored or recreated agricultural buildings, a working blacksmith shop, beautiful gardens and an 1800’s rambling adobe ranch home.

A must-see when touring the area with the Seal Beach motorhome rental is the Museum of Latin American Art, founded by Dr. Robert Gumbiner in 1996, in nearby Long Beach. MOLAA is one of the only museums in the entire United States that is dedicated to Latin American and Latino art.

Where to Park It
