Nestled in the heart of Marin County, Ross is a charming town that lies just to the north of San Francisco. Its tree-lined streets are surrounded by rolling hills, creating a natural getaway between the waters of San Francisco Bay and the rugged coastline of the Marin Headlands.

The land on which it lies was parceled out following the Mexican Revolution in 1821 and originally named Ranch Punta de Quentin Canada de San Anselmo. In 1857, a Scottish immigrant, James Ross, purchased the ranch and set up a trading post known as “Ross Landing”. The first post office was opened 20 years later, with the town of Ross officially established in 1908.

The Great Outdoors

Just to the west of Ross towers the peak of Mount Tamalpais, which is protected within the Mount Tamalpais State Park and blanketed in redwood and oak forests. After parking your RV rental near Ross, you can set out to explore the hiking routes, including a trail that leads to the picturesque Cataract Falls. If you rent a motorhome in Ross, follow the access road that takes you through the Natalie Coffin Greene Park to Phoenix Lake, which serves as a major hub of outdoor recreation at the base of Mount Tamalpais.

Also nestled on the eastern slope of Mount Tamalpais is the Baltimore Canyon Open Space Preserve, with the 30-foot-high Dawn Falls cascading at the head of the canyon. To the south is the famous Muir Woods National Monument, a tract of towering old-growth redwood trees that forms part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Walk beneath these natural giants to Cathedral and Bohemian Grove or take in the views across the treetops towards the Pacific Ocean and the summit of Mount Tamalpais. Muir Woods is also just a short drive from Muir Beach, a quiet stretch of sand that’s accessed along a 450-foot pedestrian bridge and connects to the Coastal Trail.

From here you can hike or drive to the Tennessee Valley Trailhead and park your RV before setting off on foot to explore the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A 1.7-mile long trail leads through grassy fields ignited with wildflowers to Tennessee Beach, a magnificent stretch of coast on the Marin Headlands. When you book an RV rental in Ross, CA, you can also take in the dramatic coastal views from the historic Point Bonita Lighthouse or photograph the iconic Golden Gate Bridge from the 19th-century concrete battery at Fort Baker.
