Rio Vista is a city in Solano County, California. The area around Rio Vista was first settled in 1844 by European settlers who wanted to farm the land. However, harsh winters and a lack of food supplies caused both European and Native American settlers to abandon their camps. They named the settlement “Hale-che-muck”, a Native American word which means “nothing to eat”. By 1857, a new settlement near Hale-che-muck had sprung up, named “Brazos del Rio” (Arms of the River), established by Colonel NH Davis. Salmon fishing had become the primary industry in the area, making a wharf necessary to ship the fish to other markets. A wharf was constructed but the captain of a steamer delivering mail refused to land at the wharf, citing that it was too small. Davis responded by petitioning the construction of a post office, which would force the steamer to stop there. The postal system refused, stating that there were other post offices with the same or a similar name; Davis suggested renaming the town “Vista del Rio”, which was later shortened to Rio Vista.

Book an RV in Solano County and you are ready to retrace the steps of the explorers who first settled this area. There are other nearby cities that are equally interesting to visit and explore. Fairfield was established in 1856 by a clipper boat captain, who named it after his hometown in the state of Connecticut. Sacramento was originally developed with the intention of creating an agricultural community but the discovery of gold in the nearby foothills in 1848 turned it into a trading post and mining epicenter. The city of Lockeford is situated on the area that was previously the farm or ranch of a Dr. DJ Locke. Oakley became a town in 1898 after RC Marsh was named the area's first postmaster. Concord was originally named “Todos Sandos”, which is now the name of Concord's historic downtown plaza. A Rio Vista RV trailer rental is the perfect vehicle to transport you to these places and others.

The Great Outdoors

Grizzly Island Wildlife Area is an estuarine marsh preserve, the largest of its kind in the United States, and home to many endangered animal species. It is divided into ten sections, some of which aren't connected and are surrounded by privately owned property. But it is also a managed outdoor recreation area, offering guests the opportunity to fish and hunt, hike, view and photograph the environment, and more. It has restrooms and phones; some areas have been developed to accommodate handicapped visitors. Keep your Rio Vista RV rental nearby to use as a photography blind complete with food and coffee.

Mount Diablo State Park was established in 1851; it is a managed outdoor recreational area good for hiking, photography, and nature viewing. Cycling and horseback riding are also allowed within the park. Sandstone blocks quarried within the park were used to construct the visitor center, which explains the cultural and historical value of the area. From the summit, on a clear day, you can see as far west as the Golden Gate Bridge and beyond.

Frank's Tract State Recreation Area is a popular location with anglers and hunters, but it can only be reached by water. The perpetually flooded delta area is connected to San Joaquin River and Old River, which feed the lake. It is also a good area for nature photography, due to its lengthy list of bird species, many of whom reside on the lake year-round.
