Originally Port Costa was a hub for trade, with merchant ships sailing into the harbor. Grain and other goods were stored in warehouses while workers occupied Port Costa’s saloons. Nowadays, the quiet town is surrounded by rolling hills and lush coastal parklands. It’s an ideal place to search for an RV in Contra Costa County and start discovering the region.

Despite the passing years, Port Costa still retains its vintage charm and pleasant scenery. The place is located on the southern banks of the Carquinez Strait and is easy to reach from Martinez, Concord, and Vallejo. To arrive in Port Costa by road you can either take Mc Ewen Road from California Highway 4 or leave Interstate 80 and follow Pomona Street to Port Costa via Crockett.

Continue driving southeast from Walnut Creek and you’ll soon come to the South Gate Entrance to Mount Diablo State Park. The area is dominated by the peak of Mount Diablo which stands at a height of 3,849 feet, however, the surrounding hills and valleys are equally impressive. There are several hiking trails beginning from Mitchell Canyon, on the northern side of the park. Routes range from easy to strenuous. This region of the park is the best place to see wildflowers in the springtime.

If you’re ready for a real road trip, then drive your vehicle even farther east to Yosemite National Park in California’s breathtaking Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Camping in the Tuolumne Meadows, hiking to alpine lakes, and skiing, are just a few of the numerous recreational activities available in the park.

There are many attractions to see on the way including the Round Valley Regional Preserve, a protected wildlife habitat which was once the home of Native American tribes, and Red Hills Recreation Management Area, a refuge for bobcats, jackrabbits, and approximately 88 species of bird.

Or, rent a motorhome in Port Costa and drive across the Carquinez Strait to the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area. This natural area covers almost 13,000 acres, most of which is wetland with island parcels sprinkled between waterways. It’s a haven for several rare and endangered species. By visiting the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area you’ll have the opportunity to see bald eagles, California black rail, doves, and salt marsh harvest mice living in their natural environment.

RV Parks

After the sun has set, you’ll need to find a safe place to park your camper rental in Port Costa and stock up on supplies. Fortunately, there are supermarkets, clothing stores, and gas stations located in the neighboring towns of Crockett and Martinez. There are also a few RV parks within a 20-minute drive of Port Costa.

Rodeo Mobile Home and RV Park is located just a few blocks from San Pablo Bay with plenty of cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores nearby. The park is easily accessible via Interstate 80. On-site, guests have access to Wi-Fi and cable TV. There also pull-through sites and full hookups available.

Tradewinds RV Park is north of Carquinez Strait in South Vallejo and is accessible via Interstate 80. It could be a nice place to stay if you plan to visit San Francisco, Napa Valley, or Grizzly Island Wildlife Preserve. This is a medium-sized park which can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet on gravel pads. The sites provide 30/50 amp electrical hookups and cable TV hookups (optional), as well as Wi-Fi, washing facilities, and a shared lounge. Some sites have patios and picnic benches.

Another option is to drive your Port Costa motorhome rental out of the city and spend the night in Juniper Campground. This rustic site is located within Mount Diablo State Park and accessible from the South Gate Entrance. There are a limited number of RV sites and a shared toilet block. Remember to stock up on food, water, and gas in Walnut Creek.

Explore the City

The school was closed in 1948 however the Port Costa Conservation Society strives to maintain and renovate this historic building.
