Planada is a tiny town in the heart of California, a few miles outside the city of Merced. Aside from a few shops and restaurants, Planada is mostly a residential area just down the road from Merced and an hour's drive north of Fresno.

When Planada was first settled, Swiss dairy farmers were among the first to set up shop in the area. They decided on naming the town Geneva, which would remain the name until 1911 when a contest was held to select a new name for the community.

Planada might not be the largest or most exciting town, but it is situated in a fantastic and ideal location if you love the great outdoors and want to rent an RV. The stunning Sierra Nevada Mountain Range is found around an hour's drive east of Planada, and essentially runs north to south throughout the entirety of California on its eastern border. When you book an RV in Planada, you’ll have access to all of the incredible national forests and parks of the Sierra Nevadas, as well as countless other recreation areas and parks in the Golden State.

Outdoors Adventures

Planada isn’t exactly the sort of place you visit for its nightlife or big city attractions; much like other towns in the vicinity, Planada is worth visiting for its proximity to some exquisite scenery and wilderness in California. You can take your Planada RV rental to places like Eastman Lake Recreation Area that happens to be a short distance outside of town. Eastman Lake is a large lake, with exciting beaches and campgrounds around the edges of the water. You can hunt, fish, boat, water ski, swim, or play disc golf among other activities when you decide to stay the night here in your Planada camper rental. Hensley Lake Recreation Area is another fabulous lakeside park nearby. The park is dotted with gently rolling hills with excellent hiking trails and clear vantage points over the lake. You can take a dip in the swimming areas or simply suntan on the beaches. There are a few different campgrounds on site in addition to a day use area with picnic tables and grills.

When you rent an RV in Planada, you just happen to be quite close to some of the best-known national parks in the entire country. Kings Canyon National Park is no more than a two hour's drive to the southeast, a small price to pay for the pleasure of viewing a natural treasure. Here you can see towering, 14,000-foot-tall mountains, and epic sequoia trees larger than any others on Earth. In fact, the General Grant tree is a natural landmark of its own and registers in at the second largest tree on the planet. There are sprawling backcountry wilderness areas waiting for you to explore, and three large campgrounds with hundreds of spacious campsites between the lot of them. Canyoneering and mountain climbing are highly popular activities at Kings Canyon, but nothing compares to the climbing over at Yosemite National Park, just a 40-minute drive from Planada. Yosemite receives well over four million guests each year, all eagerly anticipating the glorious landscapes and hidden waterfalls of the park. You can camp out at one of several campgrounds when you bring your Planada RV rental to the national park, and take part if a variety of outdoor adventures at the foot of El Capitan, the most prominent geological feature in the park.

RV Parks to Visit

Perhaps the easiest part of planning your trip will be locating places to stay with your camper rental near Planada. There are a handful of RV parks and campgrounds near Merced and countless others up by the entrance of Yosemite National Park to the east. Castle Air Museum RV Park is located on the northern outskirts of Merced and uniquely features an airplane museum on site. You can tour the facilities and see lots of decommissioned planes from different eras.

The Lakes RV & Golf Resort could be a decent place to stay if you're traveling to California to hit the links. The park has complimentary golf for each day you choose to stay overnight, as well as a pool, spa, and a clubhouse.

If you want to get closer to Yosemite, you can camp out inside the park or opt to stay in cozier accommodations outside the park like Yosemite RV Resort. There is a concierge service for guests, a general store, a pool, and a playground for small kids.

City Sightseeing

Again, most people don’t arrive in Planada expecting landmarks, museums, concert venues, and other big attractions. Planada is more so known for its natural beauty. To get your big city fix, you might head on down the road to Merced, California to experience something a little larger and more touristy. Applegate Park Zoo is an animal sanctuary with bears, birds, wolves, and other animals native to California. You might not see exotic animals like rhinos or zebras but this zoo sure is a fun experience if you consider yourself an animal lover.

Playhouse Merced and Merced Theatre are two venues where you can catch live performances ranging from locally produced musicals to professional concerts with touring musicians. Merced Theatre is especially interesting due to its historic status and appealing architectural style.

The Merced County Courthouse Museum is housed in the old county courthouse built in 1875. This historic building features Italianate style architecture, a true work of art and a pleasure to see up close. You can learn lots of fascinating things about Merced County in this exceptional museum, like about the first settlers, the native indigenous locals, and more.
