Pacific Grove is a charming coastal village on the Pacific Ocean, by the cities of Monterey and Salinas in central California. The name adequately describes the sweet-smelling pine forests along the sea. Pacific Grove was inhabited by local indigenous tribes before the arrival of the settlers, but in 1875, the Pacific Land Improvement Company purchased the land to build a vacation retreat modeled after Ocean Grove in New Jersey.

Pacific Grove has long been a delightful artist enclave, inspiring painters, musicians, and writers among others to get in touch with their creative sides. The town is dotted with elegant Victorian cottages and has more historical buildings per capita than any other spot in California. You can book an RV in Pacific Grove and fully use it to your advantage by touring up and down the California coast on California Highway 1, an iconic highway ranked among the best places to drive on the planet. There are thousands of reasons to visit this seaside community and even more reasons to rent an RV in Pacific Grove. Outdoors Adventures

No matter what part of California you may find yourself in, there will be an abundance of natural beauty. The small peninsula that Pacific Grove inhabits is no exception to this rule. Some of the best state parks in the Golden State can be found within a short drive, like Garrapata State Park south of town. Two miles of incredible undeveloped coastline are shielded from the road by towering groves of redwood trees. There are steep paths down to the water’s edge that you can hike on, and rocky, hidden coves to explore. It is quite common to see gray whales, sea lions, harbor seals, and other incredible sea animals while looking out on the water from the lofty cliffs above. Fort Ord Dunes State Park is also a fabulous state park on the coast that you can bring your Pacific Grove camper rental to with a short drive north. What was once a military training area has been reclaimed by nature, with stunning stretches of white sand beach and massive dunes covered in a variety of different plant species. There are hiking paths, bicycle paths, and an interpretive center on site to teach park guests about the local ecosystem as well as the history of Fort Ord.

When you bring your Pacific Grove motorhome rental south to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, you’ll immediately wonder how it hasn’t become its own national park yet. The park is even nicknamed “little Yosemite” after Yosemite National Park, over in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, for its imposing canyons and unimaginable beauty. The park is known also for its mighty redwood trees and a bevy of amazing hiking trails. You can opt to stay at the large hotel in the park, or stay with your Pacific Grove camper rental in one of the park's campgrounds.

California has plenty of national parks to visit, but the closest one to Pacific Grove is also one of the country’s newest. Pinnacles National Park is less than an hour's drive when you rent an RV near Pacific Grove and set off for adventure. Pinnacles National Park’s name refers to the ancient volcano that has since gone extinct. There are countless miles of trails to hike and mountain peaks to summit with some pretty breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The park is also home to some phenomenal rock climbing for people of all abilities.

RV Parks to Visit

There might not be too many RV parks or campgrounds in Pacific Grove itself, but there sure are a handful of options in the surrounding towns nearby. Carmel by the River RV Park has full hookup sites, premium sites, and mega RV sites for groups or people with large RVs. The park is close to both Carmel and Monterey and has its own general store.

Marina Dunes RV Resort and Monterey Fairgrounds RV Park are right next to one another, and two of the closest available options. Both have access to undeveloped beachfront, while Marina Dunes has a general store, a gift shop, sports courts, a fitness center, and more.

Saddle Mountain Ranch RV & Campground could be a good bet if you head south and want to stay inland. The park is pet-friendly and has playgrounds and a swimming pool for guests to use.

City Sightseeing

Between Monterrey, Salinas, Carmel, and Pacific Grove, there are enough amazing attractions to keep you occupied for the entirety of your trip and more. In Pacific Grove, nearly half the buildings in town are historic landmarks, with ornate Victorian style. Countless artists and authors have lived in Pacific Grove, like John Steinbeck and Robert Louis Stevenson, who once said: “I have never been in any place so dreamlike”. Point Pinos Lighthouse is perhaps the most notable of the historic structures in town, known for being the oldest operating lighthouse on the entire western seaboard. Epic views and gorgeous landscapes decorate the property around the lighthouse, making it a great place to spend the day.

The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History is a major feature in town that is worth a visit. This amazing institution has fascinating exhibits and displays concerning wildlife, plants, geology, natural history, and archeology in central California. Monterey Bay Aquarium over in Monterey is a fantastic facility right on the water. There are huge tanks full of mesmerizing jellyfish, penguins socializing with one another, and even sharks you can observe up close.

Check out the Monterey Museum of Art for an insightful look into the world of California art. Many early works from the Golden State are on display here and there are ever-changing galleries and exhibits to keep it fresh.
