Known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” Oakdale is located in central California in the San Joaquin Valley. Equidistant from Sacramento and San Francisco, the town of Oakdale serves as the perfect go-between for the forests of the east and the coast to the west. As the city continues to grow, it will become an even more popular stopping place for outdoor adventurers due to its central location.

When you book an RV in Stanislaus County, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will have to solely be driving your camper rental in Oakdale. The Stanislaus Regional Transit operates buses that serve the entire county. These buses can get you to and from any of the nearby suburban areas. But if this isn’t something you want to worry about, the roads in and around town are wide enough to easily maneuver your Oakdale RV rental.

As you learn more about the central California region and the wealth of opportunity that awaits outdoor explorers, it will be a little confusing as to why Oakdale isn’t higher on the list for those looking to visit California via RV rentals.

Discover Oakdale

The Great Outdoors

If you’re looking for a great little day trip, just north of Oakdale is the Woodward Reservoir. Here, visitors can picnic, go swimming or boating in the reservoir, and even do some go-karting. If this sounds like the perfect little escape, you can reserve a campsite and watch as the sun sinks over the lake for as many nights as you want.

Oakdale is only about an hour and a half from one of the most quintessential California outdoor locations: Yosemite National Park. A part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the towering granite peaks shoot out of the ground with such force that you cannot help but stare at them in awe. With more than 750 miles of trails, many perfectly suited for backpackers, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in California’s vast wilderness. You’ll also be able to go rafting down Merced River or challenge yourself to some rock climbing. But at the end of the day, be sure to appreciate the remoteness of where you are, and look up to the night sky and marvel in the grandeur of the Milky Way.

Even though there is a cold current that runs up the coast of California, that’s not to say that the California beaches aren’t lovely. In fact, it would only take you about two hours in the Oakdale motorhome rental to get to Point Reyes National Seashore, one of California’s protected beaches. You can soak up some sun on the beach or hike along one of the coastal hiking trails. You could even spend time at the on-site museum and learn about the natives to the land as well as the local wildlife and how to best protect it for future generations.

RV Parks

After driving your Oakdale RV rental by owner all over central California, you’ll want to find a place to spend the night. Just west of Oakdale, there are a couple primary selections.

You can pull up to the pet-friendly Turtle Beach RV Resort. Here, you will have access to full hookups, showers, BBQ areas, and the river and lake waterfront. This is especially ideal if you are travelling with a boat, or just like to be near the water.

Another wonderful option is Two Rivers RV Park, also just west of town. Beautifully located right where the Stanislaus and San Joaquin Rivers meet, you’ll have a beautiful river view no matter where in the park you are. Two Rivers is a little more rustic, only offering the bare necessities, but sometimes reconnecting with nature, and even catching your dinner from the river, is just the therapy you need to escape from the hectic world in which we live.

Explore the City

After you’ve driven all over central California in your camper rental near Oakdale, it will be time to return to the town from whence you came and get to know it a little better.

There is certainly no way that the “Cowboy Capital of the World” wouldn’t have its very own cowboy museum. At the Oakdale Cowboy Museum, you can learn all about the difficult job these men had to do. You’ll get to see artifacts first hand, learn how the cowboy image and the industry have both changed over time, and even learn more about the various rodeo traditions. After a visit to this museum, you will either find yourself grateful to not have to do the job they do or find yourself yearning for a life like a spaghetti western movie.

If you want to stay active, the Stanislaus River runs just north of town. You can rent a kayak or canoe and spend part of your day paddling up and down the river as you get to see Oakdale from a different vantage point.

It wouldn’t be a true stay in the “Cowboy Capital” if you didn’t treat yourself to a hearty and juicy steak at the end of your time in Oakdale. Or at the very least, a really good cheeseburger topped off with some local cheese.
