Nicolaus, CA, is one of several cities belonging to the Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area and a census-designated city in Sutter County. The small Californian town was named after the owner of a ferry operating on the Feather River; the town was established in 1850 and in 1851, constructed its first post office, one of the oldest existing post offices in the state. It was a major California Gold Rush stopover for travelers on the Feather River; it used to have a state highway running through it but the destruction of the Feather River bridge during a 1955 flood caused the highway to be rerouted. The community is renowned for its environment and its sports teams, one of which was the California State Small Schools Football Champion in 2015; its teams have won awards in other sports too. Nicolaus' economy is largely agricultural, walnut orchards and rice farming being the two largest industries; it has maintained its rural feel despite its proximity to Sacramento. Most residents live in the outlying areas.

Book an RV in Sutter County and you are ready to experience farm life and rural living for real (so much better than watching it on TV). Some other nearby towns and communities might also be worth a visit. Yuba City began shortly before 1852 with one hotel, one grocery store, and a post office. Lincoln was named after an organizer and director of the California Central Railroad, Charles Lincoln Wilson (not former president Abraham Lincoln, as some non-historian buffs might mistakenly assume). Roseville, at the time of its 1913 incorporation, was home to the largest ice-making plant in the world. Knights Landing was originally named Baltimore by a physician, Dr. William Knight from Baltimore, Maryland. Legal issues forced the town to be renamed and local citizens named it after the doctor and his ferry service. Williams is one of many towns and cities nationwide that celebrate “National Night Out”, a social gathering uniting community police and neighborhood watch participants. A Nicolaus travel trailer rental is your invitation to the highways and spectacular scenery of Sutter County.

The Great Outdoors

Lake of the Woods State Wildlife Area is one of six units in the Feather River Wildlife Area, which is home to a wide variety of animal life and vegetation. Lake of the Woods runs north-south between the Feather River and Yuba County. Feather River is a managed recreational area providing fishing and hunting opportunities, as well as birdwatching and animal viewing. Visitors can try to catch a glimpse of coyotes, river otters, and various bird and waterfowl species, just to name a few.

Sutter National Wildlife Refuge is a good area for hiking in season (generally from February to June) and photography, which can be conducted from the trails. Sutter Refuge consists of wetlands, grasslands, and riparian habitats that host slightly less than 300 bird species, and a number of reptile and mammal species. It offers hunting opportunities in season and on specified days; hunting licenses are required. Keep your Nicolaus RV trailer rental nearby and you can return to a hot coffee and comfy chair when you're done.

Fremont Weir State Wildlife Area is a protected recreational area that allows for fishing and hunting; hunters can seek out pheasant, quail, waterfowl, and other species. The landscape hosts willow, cottonwood, and valley oak tree stands, surrounded by tall weeds and brush undergrowth. The area is also a floodway for the Sacramento River and visitors should be wary of flooding, especially after heavy rain.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds near Nicolaus, and some of these may have long-term residents. Your Nicolaus motorhome rental is well suited to these accommodations and all you will need to have a relaxing and enjoyable vacation.

Lake Minden RV Resort is a groomed RV park with lots of grass and is encircled by eucalyptus trees. Guests can use the restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and other amenities. Activities include volleyball and basketball (if you can throw a couple of teams together), tennis, horseshoes, mini golf, and more. Guests can relax in the clubhouse or dine out at the on-site restaurant.

Yuba Sutter County Fairgrounds has a rustic RV campground in a big field. The sites are spaced well apart, making it easy to park by day, and have electricity and water. Access is controlled by a passcode protected gate which is locked at night.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do near Nicolaus. If after all this adventure, you're still feeling an adrenaline rush, head for nearby Lincoln and try out an extreme adventure skydiving school (if that doesn't do the trick, nothing will). No adrenaline rush? Check out a local nearby amphitheater that is a concert venue all summer long. There are many farms that will prove interesting to city (or even suburban) folk; one of them specializes in raising pumpkins. No visit should be without seeing at least one museum, and a local museum dedicates itself to the men and women of the armed forces. Make certain you allocate some time to take your Nicolaus RV rental out for a spin on the open highway and snap some additional vacation photos.

Food enthusiasts will enjoy the variety of cuisines within striking distance, from Mexican and barbecue joints to pub restaurants, cafes with food menus, and locally owned venues with some very interesting names (and you thought reverse psychology only worked on children). One of the cafes dishes up some very creative items, and in big portions, too. They are known for their breakfast and Sunday brunch, but if you make it here, skip the menu and go straight for the Monte Cristo (followed up by a mimosa). Don't blush if you have to take some of your meal home to your Nicolaus luxury RV rental; the portions really are that big and nothing says vacation better than a delicious late-night snack.
