Nicasio village is a census-designated community at the heart of Marin County, California. It is located in a valley that the Nicasio Creek drains into and also the site of Nicasio Reservoir. The landscape consists of hillsides surrounding the valley, forested with oak, bay, and fir trees; stands of redwood trees can be found along some of the creeks. The area surrounding the community has abundant wildlife, as well as beef and dairy cattle ranches, and a few vineyards. The outlying area is also home to Skywalker Ranch, the famed homestead of director George Lucas. The village itself has a few small buildings, one of which is a Druid's hall. A small red one-room schoolhouse, built in 1871, is a listed historical landmark and is located just north of town. The village was the subject of a book published in 2008 which detailed the history of the region.

RV rentals in Marin County are abundant and are a good way to begin your exploration of this intriguing area. There are some other towns that also have the potential to be interesting and worth visiting. Tomales is notable for its Victorian architecture and Queen Anne cottages. Bolinas is one of only a few communities west of the San Andreas fault; it rests on a separate tectonic plate from the rest of the state, which even makes the vegetation different. Larkspur is a bedroom community (for San Francisco) in the midst of 21st-century development, which has a library sporting stained glass windows. Woodacre was the hometown of a teenaged Robin Williams and is still home to Count Basie Orchestra drummer Harold Jones. Novato is heavily invested in the arts community, with several museums, an arts center, and a historic park all dedicated to the history, culture, and artistic environment that is present.

The Great Outdoors

Point Reyes National Seashore originally began as Point Reyes lighthouse, created in 1870, due to the number of shipwrecks that had occurred in the area. Today it is a diverse protected area, encompassing the shoreline, offshore underwater habitats, and the neighboring hills and flatlands. Visitors can beachcomb on clear days and also watch ocean breakers crash into the rocks below on less pleasant days. They can also view the diverse plant and animal life that is given refuge, including elephant seals who inhabit the nearby beaches in certain seasons.

Samuel P. Taylor State Park is a semi-developed outdoor recreation area perfect for a multitude of activities. Visitors can go hiking or horseback riding, or mountain bike riding along one of the dedicated trails that follows Lagunitas Creek and the old North Pacific Coast Railroad line. Along the way, observers will see populations of redwood, oak, and bay laurel tree stands, as well as a variety of flower species. Park your Nicasio travel trailer rental nearby and you will have all the comforts of home waiting for you when your activity is done.

Mount Tamalpais Watershed is a limited recreational area and the main source of domestic water for Marin County. It is a popular site for hiking and cycling, picnicking, and horseback riding. Staff in the park are responsible for monitoring, protecting, and restoring resources and natural habitats, maintaining trails and access roads, and assisting and educating the public.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see in Nicasio and the surrounding area. Tour companies offer sunset cruises that include cocktails and drinks, a small buffet, and live entertainment (as if a San Francisco Bay sunset isn't enough). Other companies provide guided bike tours of the Golden Gate Bridge and nearby communities; some of the routes can be steep and cyclists should inquire about the route and difficulty level in advance. There are numerous parks and outdoor destinations just waiting for you; some can be visited on a tour or you can create your own self-guided tour in your Nicasio motorhome rental. Hit the open highways and experience freedom and comfort. RVs were made for this, so why not?

At the end of a busy day, nothing is nicer than a delicious meal. Nicasio has pizzerias, bar pub restaurants, and so much more. One Indian restaurant has outdoor seating and a menu allowing customers to choose their spice levels; especially good is the pesto naan and garlic chicken fried bites (these are separate dishes). Prices are reasonable and the portions are large. Another restaurant specializing in Italian food gets creative with traditional and not-so-traditional recipes; the ingredients are sourced locally and always fresh. If you eat here, try the ground buffalo ragu with homemade pasta.

As you most likely won't finish every last bite, don't be shy about having the rest wrapped up and taking it home to your Nicasio luxury RV rental for a late night snack. If you thought it was good in the restaurant, try to imagine finishing it off in a comfortable lawn chair under an open sky. This is what vacations should be made of.
