Discover Newberry Springs

The Great Outdoors

About 15 miles from Newberry Springs, the Rodman Mountains Wilderness Area offers visitors a unique glimpse into the prehistoric life of the Mojave region. Before entering the scenic area, you will see speckled mountains and cliffs, desert shrub, and an endless blue sky. However, once you get exploring the wilderness, keep your eyes trained on the rockfaces around you. You will see petroglyphs, some 12,000 years old, decorating the natural landscape. You can imagine what the various carvings may represent as you try to piece together a story or discern some recognizable shapes.

Just about an hour’s drive west down I-40 is the Mojave National Preserve. Here, you can be dazzled by the otherworldly landscape of the captivating Mojave. If you manage to visit in the spring, you will be greeted with a beautiful canvas of wildflowers. At 1.6 million acres, there is so much to explore in this vast landscape. With 20 miles of marked trails and an additional 20 miles that are unmarked and for experienced hikers only, you will be able to see a decent share of the famed desert. No matter what you end up doing with your day, be sure to pack plenty of water and sunscreen.

If you’re willing to drive your Newberry Springs RV rental a little farther from the community, then Sequoia National Forest, 175 miles to the northwest, is the perfect destination. Once inside the forest, you can go on a mystical journey through the towering sequoias, climb up some of the peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, or even challenge yourself with some white water rafting along Kern River. If all of these opportunities sound like paradise, you can park your Newberry Springs motorhome rental and camp out in this remote wilderness to experience more of the beauty of California.

After exploring the wonders of Southern California, you’re going to need to find a place to call home for your camper rental near Newberry Springs. Luckily, there are several places around the area that offer accommodations for you and your adventuring crew.

Just down from central Newberry Springs is Newberry Mountain RV Park. The park offers full hookups, restrooms and showers, and laundry facilities. You can also unwind from the day and do a little fishing in one of the two gem-colored on-site lakes.

Just about 15 miles to the west of Newberry Springs is Desert Springs RV Park in Daggett. At Desert Springs, you will have access to full hookups, bathrooms and showers, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, and an on-site, full-service grill and bar with rotating specials.

Explore the City

After spending time in the mystical wonderland of Sequoia National Forest or entranced by the petroglyphs at Rodman, you’re going to want to turn your Newberry Springs camper rental back to town and spend a little time in the oasis.

Just about 15 miles north of Newberry Springs is the Calico Early Man Site. The archaeological site was once an ancient Pleistocene lakebed and has produced many prehistoric artifacts, including tools, weapons, and homestead remains. Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the site has offered a lot of information on how our early ancestors survived in the dry, mountainous region.

Just down the road from the Calico Early Man Site is the Calico Ghost Town. Once a proud and bustling silver mining town in the 1880s, Calico became a ghost town as quickly as 1904. Today, many of the buildings have been restored and visitors can go to the on-site museum and learn more about silver mining or even go for a ride in a mine cart. There are often special events going on, like bluegrass concerts and film festivals, so maybe you’ll get lucky and be able to attend one of these popular events.

After a day of exploration, you can refuel with some local food from one of Newberry Springs’ cafes or diners.
