Located in Santa Barbara County, California, the small town of New Cuyama is thought to be named after the Chumash Indian word, Kuyam, meaning clam.

Nearby cities include Bakersfield, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria. The town sits in Cuyama Valley and is surrounded by mountain ranges. To the south west are the Sierra Madre Mountains, La Panza Range to the north and the Caliente Range in the north-east. Any of these ranges would be a great place to take your RV rental.

The Great Outdoors

Los Padres National Forest was established in 1936 and includes the majority of the mountains along the California coastline between Ventura and Monterey.

Pyramid Lake is a man made reservoir formed when damming Piru Creek. It is the deepest lake in the California Water Project and now offers a range of recreational activities. Along with boating and jet skiing, fishing is allowed and various species of bass can be caught in the lake as well as trout.

At Bitter Creek Wildlife Refuge, you’ll find rare wildlife and plants, including the Californian Condor. The area was once a cattle ranch, but is now the hub for Californian Condor conservation. In addition, expect to find elk, deer, badgers and many other mammals while at the refuge.

Just over an hour north is the Carrizo Plain National Monument, a small remainder of the once vast grasslands of California’s Central Valley. Visitors have commented that they can “hear” the silence, but the plain is home to varied wildlife and plants. Soda Lake and Painted Rock are two prominent features of the area to visit.

With outstanding views, Cuyama Peak Lookout is a great place to visit. While It is possible to drive your luxury motorhome rental from New Cuyama, but hiking to the peak would be more sensible! The 20 foot tall lookout was built in 1934 and used by the Aircraft Warning service during World War Two.

RV Parks

Within the Los Padres National Forest is Figueroa Campground, which also serves as a trailhead for several hiking routes. The site has 35 campsites with barbecue stands and fire rings. RV’s and trailers up to 25 feet can be accommodated.

Bakersfield River Run RV Park is an easy drive in your camper rental from New Cuyama. The site offers pull-through or back-in options and can cater for trailers up to 200 feet long. Each site benefits from a full hookup, 60 channel cable TV and WiFi. An onsite store sells all your essential supplies and the clubhouse features a large recreation room.

Heading north from New Cuyama you’ll find Lost Hills RV park. The site can accept RV’s and trailers up to 65 feet long and provides electrical hookups. It’s a great location with an all year round swimming pool and free WiFi access.

The Walmart stores in Bakersfield and Santa Maria also accept RV’s overnight, but remember there will be no amenities available, and you will need to check with the manager to get permission.

Exploring the City

Kern County Museum in Bakersfield is just a short drive on from Kern and nicely complements the Oil Museum. The museum houses thousands of individual artifacts that have been housed in historic buildings to create various exhibits. The exhibits take you from California’s gold rush, through its development and diverse heritage in one location.

A trip to Traver Ranch will take you back in time to 1940’s farming. Long since abandoned, the ranch is now home to a range of wildlife, but there are also exhibits of farming equipment from the era. Park you luxury RV rental from New Cuyama here and head out to explore the many hiking routes.

Santa Barbara Pistachio Company is located a little way south of New Cuyama and is well worth a visit. The family run farm grows organic pistachio’s and are passionate about their business. You can visit the farm and buy some goods in the farm shop.

The California Living Museum in Bakersfield is home to over 250 animals. Highlights include the black bear exhibit and an underground reptile house. All of the animals arrived at the zoo because they either have been hand reared or have a physical disability that prevents them living in the wild. The favorite section for most is the Cats of California exhibit, with bobcats and mountain lions.
