Mokelumne Hill is a census-designated community, also known as Big Bar, Moke Hill or just “the Hill”. It is located in Calaveras County, California and has a warm-summer Mediterranean style climate. It began as a gold mining town, with all the corresponding social problems that came with the gold rush but soon solved the problems and began to grow in prominence. It was, at one point, the county seat. However, after the gold began to run out, it diminished in its standing and lost its county seat status. Gold mining was replaced by cattle ranching, which is still an important part of the community's economy today. The community today also relies on tourism due to its historical importance but has maintained its infrastructure, avoiding becoming just another stereotypical tourist town.

Book an RV in Calaveras County and you are ready to begin your own exploration of this historic area. There are a few other communities that warrant spending some time in. Auburn is known as “the Endurance Capital of the World”, due to its long list of endurance sports events (the most of any city in the world). Placerville was previously known as both Dry Diggins (for its method of separating gold from soil), followed by Hangtown due to its notoriety for hangings (which may have been an urban myth). Angels Camp is widely known as the location of the Jumping Frog Contest, made famous by a Mark Twain story. Manteca's settlers originally wanted to name the community Cowell Station but settled for Monteca, which was misspelled by the railroad as Manteca (which in Spanish means “lard”). Rio Vista is an easy city to walk around in due to its small size (buses are available but usually not necessary). Rent a motorhome in Mokelumne Hill and you are well prepared for taking in the sights and sounds of these amazing areas.

The Great Outdoors

Pardee Reservoir is a semi-developed park reserve where visitors can hike, picnic, and relax with family and friends. Fishing is possible from both on shore and on the lake, which is stocked with trout, salmon, black bass and more. Hiking trails are equipped with toilets and visitors can engage in wildlife watching and even photography (the wildlife and environment are both picture worthy). Your Mokelumne Hill motorhome rental is a perfect photography blind for getting those hard-to-capture shots.

Eldorado National Forest is a woodlands reserve with recreational opportunities to hike, camp, and more. It is managed by the Forest Service as a resource for recreation, timber, grazing, and wildlife conservation.

New Hogan Lake is an environmental recreation preserve suitable for water activities and other land-based activities in the surrounding area. Guests can enjoy the rolling grassland and stands of oak trees that surround the lake while mountain biking or horseback riding, or engage in wildlife viewing of the diverse mammal and bird species that inhabit the area. It is also a good area for practicing photography.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds in the surrounding area. Some of the campgrounds have cabins and tent camping in addition to RV camping. Your Mokelumne Hill travel trailer rental is well matched to the available accommodations, providing you with all the creature comforts you need.

Gold Country Campground Resort is a family oriented RV park amidst a wooded mountainous area. Individual sites offer full hookups and picnic tables. Some sites have fire pits and mountain views. Guests can rent by the day or the week.

Far Horizons 49er Village RV Resort a modern family-friendly RV park with swimming pools and a hot tub. There is an on-site restaurant, fishing ponds, and activities such as shuffleboard, horseshoes, and billiards. Individual sites have full hookups and picnic tables; some sites have pull-through access and grass, gravel, or paved pads.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and experience in Mokelumne Hill, so why not start with the vineyards? One local winery has tastings on weekend days and live bands in the evening, and even keeps beer on tap for those who aren't wine aficionados. A local gallery has petroglyph art on display and for sale. One specialty camp instructs visitors on how to pan for gold and sponsors cookouts for its guests. While you have your Mokelumne Hill RV rental, consider taking it for a spin along one of the county's highways; this is what RVs are for.

There are a few chain restaurants in the town but most are locally owned and operated, spelling fresh food and ingredients for whoever comes their way. One cafe provides thinly sliced hashbrowns with their omelets; try the portabella mushroom, spinach, and goat cheese omelet if you make it here. Another diner specializes in hot dogs but also has hamburgers on the menu. It may not sound like much but gourmet hot dogs are always worth giving a try. Portions at most of this community's restaurants are large, so expect to take your leftovers home to your Mokelumne Hill luxury RV rental for a late night snack or next day's lunch.
