The Great Outdoors

When you pick up an RV rental in Moccasin CA, you’ll be just a few miles away from some of the country’s most stunning national forests. Drive your RV out of Moccasin on Highway 120 and you’ll find yourself cruising along the picturesque Tioga Road. This scenic bypass is accessible from spring until fall and traverses the northern side of Yosemite National Park from west to east. The road passes the Tuolumne Meadows, which are sprinkled with alpine lakes, multi-use trails, and campsites, en route to Tioga Pass.

To explore the heart of the famous Yosemite Valley, take your travel trailer rental in Moccasin slightly farther on Highway 140 to Yosemite Village. The area hosts the Yosemite Visitor Center as well as a handful of RV-suitable campsites. Yosemite Valley is an excellent place for families to get active, with 12 miles of mostly-flat cycle path, easy trails to nearby lakes, and strenuous climbs to mountain peaks.

Take your road trip farther north and you’ll arrive at Stanislaus National Forest; an extensive natural area which covers nearly 900,000 acres. Between mountains of dense pine and conifer forests, visitors can explore glacial meadows, alpine lakes, and volcanic ridges in Emigrants Wilderness Area. There are several trailheads which are accessible from Pinecrest and Cold Springs on Highway 108. These range from moderate walking to tough trekking to mountain peaks and viewpoints.

The forest is also teeming with water sports activities. Both Cherry Lake and Pinecrest Lake offer opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and motorized boating. For a real adventure, visitors can join an excursion and raft along the Stanislaus and Tuolumne Rivers.

When you’ve finished backpacking in remote areas, return your Moccasin RV rental by owner to the town via Red Hills Recreational Management Area. Overshadowed by California’s Sierra Nevada, the 7,000-acre park has its own unique eco-systems and a fascinating combination of plant species. During the springtime, Red Hills is lit up with the vibrant colors of wildflowers and the meadows are teeming with native bird species including swallows, hawks, and woodpeckers. The park is said to host over 88 species of birds as well as foxes, coyotes, and bobcats. You can take a picnic to Red Hills and spend an afternoon observing wildlife or exploring trails.

Explore the City

Moccasin originated as a company town in the early 1920s. Owned by Hetch Hetchy Water & Power, the town’s residents were the friends and family of employees at Moccasin Powerhouse. Prior to this, Moccasin had served as a camp for miners on the Big Oak Flat Road during California’s booming Gold Rush era. Nowadays, Moccasin is owned by San Francisco City and County and the community remains small, with very few commercial services available.

Despite this, Moccasin is a charming place to spend a day or two of your vacation. Strolling through residential streets you can enjoy the natural beauty of the hills surrounding Moccasin. Or, take a walk along the lakeside to see the original Moccasin Powerhouse standing side by side with the new Moccasin Powerhouse which was opened in 1969.

You can follow Moccasin Creek north to the outskirts of the community to visit Moccasin Creek Hatchery. The hatchery sits in the foothills of the Mother Lode Region, just minutes from Red Hills Recreational Management Area, and provides a hatching ground for trout.

Another option is to drive your Moccasin camper rental eastwards around the first bend of Highway 120 for a panoramic view of Moccasin Reservoir and the surrounding hills. There’s something to suit everyone, no matter your interests when you rent an RV in Moccasin, California.
