Marshall is a small town in Marin County, CA. It’s located around 50 miles north of San Francisco on the east shoreline of Tomales Bay. Book an RV in Marshall to explore this beautiful area of northern California.

The town was named after four Marshall brothers who started their dairy business in the area around 1850. There is still a dairy industry in the town, but oyster and clam farming have replaced it as the main commerce.

To the north is the large city of Santa Rosa and a short distance east are the wine regions of Napa and Sonoma. Marshall is on the edge of the Point Reyes National Shoreline and to the south is the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The Great Outdoors

Dominating the area is the Point Reyes National Seashore, a natural haven for over 1500 species of plants and animals. The park covers over 259 square kilometers of wilderness area offering great hiking routes and plenty to explore. There are various visitor centers in the park, including the Point Reyes Historic Lighthouse and a range of multimedia shows, so plenty to keep the whole family busy.

The spectacular Alamare Falls is accessed by following the Coast Trail from Palomarin Trailhead. From Palomarin, the round trip is approximately eight miles but well worth it. Alamare Falls is rare because they flow directly into the ocean.

The Tule Elk Preserve was set up to protect a small herd of tule elk that was close to extinction. From just ten individual animals in 1978, the herd has now grown to over 440. The best location to view the elk is at Tomales Point where they graze freely close to the road. October is the rutting season, and it’s a great time to visit.

RV Parks

Lawsons Landing RV Park is just north of Marshall at Tomales Bay with sites located right on the edge of the water. The facilities are limited but there is a store on site for all your essential supplies.

Just a little further north is Bodega Bay RV Park, a family business opened in 1967. The majority of sites are full hook-up including cable TV. Free WiFi is available along with a supplies store, laundry facilities and fenced dog run.

Head south in your RV rental from Marshall and you’ll find the Olema Campground. The site is aimed at family fun with a clubhouse, playground, and outdoor games areas. Pull-through and back in sites are available for your RV, some with full hook-up.

Wine Country RV Park provides only full-hookup sites, including water, sewerage, cable TV and WiFi. The park offers both short-and long-term stays and gives easy access to Santa Rosa and the wine regions.

Exploring the City

The town is right on the Tomales Bay shoreline and life tends to revolve around the sea. As you’d expect, seafood features heavily in the local restaurants of Marshall especially freshly caught oysters, but you’ll also find American style diners and vegetarian-friendly places to eat.

If antiques are your thing and you have a camper rental from Marshall, then a trip to Petaluma would be a wonderful place to put on your to-do list. This pretty town is packed with shops offering collectibles and antique items.

A little further to the east near Santa Rosa is an interesting museum that anyone who remembers the Peanuts cartoons will not want to miss. The Charles M Schulz Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the Peanuts comic strip creator. Along with the regular screening of Peanuts movies, there are exhibitions and events for kids.

Within the Point Reyes National Seashore, you’ll find the Jack Mason Museum of West Marin History. The museum contains collections of photographs, articles, maps, newspapers and rare books, detailing the development of the area. Jack Mason was a U.C. Berkeley graduate who retired to the area in the 1960s to begin his extensive collection.
