Lucerne Valley lies in the heart of the Mojave Desert between the San Bernardino, Granite, and Ord Mountains. The iconic desert landscapes surrounding Lucerne Valley have made it a popular filming location for a number of classic western movies including the John Ford-directed Stagecoach.

Many visitors to Southern California write off this region as just a stopping point on the way to Los Angeles. What many don’t realize is that when you book an RV in Lucerne Valley you don’t need to worry about things like traffic, crowded attractions, and high prices. Instead, you’ll have the chance to venture off the beaten path and explore something that few people ever get to see – an authentic desert community that’s remained mostly untouched by tourism.

The Great Outdoors

With Big Bear Lake only a short drive away, there’s always going to be something exciting to do outside when you get an RV rental in Lucerne Valley. The alpine lake is a welcome refuge from the heat of Lucerne Valley and the many trails traversing the surrounding mountains make it a hiker’s paradise. The lake also offers boat rentals from kayaks all the way up to large pontoon boats for fishing and entertaining. In the winter, Big Bear Lake is also one of the most popular ski areas in Southern California.

Joshua Tree National Park is also not far away and is an ideal place to go for a road trip when you choose a motorhome rental in Lucerne Valley. Its location near Palm Springs makes it quite popular, but the vast stretches of desert won’t feel too crowded. The park is a popular stargazing location as the nearby mountains protect it from the light pollution of urban areas.

For an even bigger adventure, consider making a trip out to Death Valley National Park. It’s the largest park in the U.S.’s national park system and it’s also one of the hottest places on the planet. As such, a summer trip is probably out of the question but if you can visit during the cooler months, it’s well worth it to see the park’s otherworldly landscapes.

RV Parks near Lucerne Valley

Even though Lucerne Valley has a relatively small population, its location at a crossroads in the Inland Empire region along with its wide-open landscapes means that it has a few more campsites than you might expect.

Pine Tree RV Park is on Big Bear Lake. They’ve got full hookups, laundry facilities, and bathrooms with showers. If you’re looking to spend some time in nature with your camper rental in Lucerne Valley, this could be a decent choice.

If you only need to camp for a night or two, there is also a Walmart in the town of Apple Valley, which isn’t too far away. With manager permission you could stay here for a short time, but know that you won’t have any campground amenities, so come prepared.

It’s also important that when you get a travel trailer rental in Lucerne Valley you plan your fuel stops carefully. Outside of town is wide-open countryside and service stations can be few and far between. Most of the gas stations in Lucerne Valley are on the main street, Highway 18, but if you require a large truck stop, you’ll probably need to head west towards Victorville and the urban areas surrounding it.

Exploring the Town of Lucerne Valley

In addition to the fantastic skiing and amazing hiking trails near Big Bear, there are also a couple of sites that animal lovers might want to check out: Big Bear Discovery Center and Big Bear Alpine Zoo. The Discovery Center gives an excellent introduction to the wildlife in the area, making it a good first stop before trekking into the wilderness – always be prepared. The Alpine Zoo is a little different from your typical zoo experience in that all the animals there are orphaned or rescued and the purpose of the facility is to rehabilitate them before being released back into the wild.

When you rent an RV in Lucerne Valley, you can also visit the Wolf Mountain Sanctuary, which has rescued dozens of grey wolves from terrible situations. The animals are quite friendly and you can even get down to pet some of them. If you’re interested in conservation or animal welfare, this is the place for you.

There’s also some great shopping in the Big Bear Area with the Pine Knot Village neighborhood populated with tons of interesting little shops. Science geeks will definitely want to check out the Big Bear Solar Observatory, which sits right on the edge of the lake. It’s open to the public, but tours are infrequent, so check their schedule for times. A trip there is an excellent opportunity to learn about some of the work they’re doing, including tracking solar flares and other fascinating phenomena.
