Los Alamitos is a city in Orange County, California; its name means “Little Cottonwoods” in Spanish. It dates back to 1881 when the first schoolhouse was built, but the planning of the town didn't occur until 1896. Retired Montana Senator William Clark established a beet farm and then built a sugar refinery, the first in Southern California, and housing for his workers, resulting in his planning the Los Alamitos township. At the beet industry's peak, the area resembled an ocean of beet crops; Clark's success continued until 1921 when an infestation of nematodes (insects that feed on roots) destroyed the crops and the beet industry. However, the town was established by then and continued to grow.

Los Alamitos township officially became a chartered city in 1960. It was (and is) described as “A Jewel of a City”, promoting its small-town ambiance through its recreational and park facilities, a vibrant Chamber of Commerce, and its overt friendliness.

Search for an RV in Orange County and it's wheels up for an adventure in sunny and warm California. A number of other cities within traveling distance also warrant visiting. Paramount is known for its pro-business outlook and its attention to public art. Fullerton's Fox Fullerton Theatre is a historic landmark built in 1925 by the people who designed and built Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Garden Grove has two statues symbolizing the town's history and philosophy, one of which is titled “We The People”. Costa Mesa has a symphony orchestra and repertory theater and Carson was the 1984 Olympics cycling races venue. Your Los Alamitos travel trailer rental can carry you to these destinations and more.

Discover Los Alamitos

The Great Outdoors

El Dorado East Regional Park is a cultivated recreational area with many available activities. There are playgrounds, paved bicycle trails, an archery range, and stocked fishing lakes. Picnic areas and shelters, a youth campground, and barbecue areas offer a more relaxed afternoon; guests can also try their hand at radio-controlled model aircraft and sailboats, or take in the nature center exhibits. The El Dorado Frontier train ride will take visitors on a tour of the park and everything it has to offer. Capture these moments on film (or memory card) and be certain your Los Alamitos RV rental is included in the pics.

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a coastal wetlands sanctuary accommodating more than 200 avian species such as peregrine falcons and white-faced ibis. Many of these species are or were endangered. The reserve is also home to many land-based mammals, such as coyotes, cottontail rabbits, and bats. Reptiles and (rare, endangered and non-endangered) plants can be found here, along with marine life including 60+ fish species. California sea lions and green sea turtles show up here occasionally. The sanctuary is popular with local birders and photographers; your Los Alamitos RV trailer rental is the ultimate photography blind for capturing those elusive animals without startling them or scaring them off.

Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is an example of an environment that has been cultured without losing its natural essence, something Japanese gardens are renowned for. It was opened to the public in 1981 by Lorraine Miller who named it after her departed husband. Construction of the garden was partially supported by California State University – Long Beach as an educational resource which it shares with the public. The garden has bonsai trees, a koi pond and waterfall, and offers regular public education events.

RV Parks

Exploring The City

There are lots of things to do in and around Los Alamitos once you have had your fill of nature. St. Isidore Historical Plaza is a Catholic church that is now used for carnivals and fundraisers, and would also make a good venue for weddings. It is not open fully to the public but tours can be arranged if you call ahead. There is a horse racing track and a winery, and gift and specialty items shops. Farther out, there are libraries that offer informational events and city tours, including a tour of high-end restaurants (the tour takes you to several where you can sample appetizer-sized portions of their main dishes).

And, as usual, your exotic day ends with questions about where to eat (unless you've taken the restaurant tour). Los Alamitos doesn't disappoint when it comes to cuisine; there are a huge number of eateries to choose from, many of them locally owned and operated. One Lebanese restaurant offers a watermelon, cheese, and mint appetizer, which leads one to wonder how good the main courses are going to be. One Italian restaurant offers a plate of jumbo shrimp on a bed of pasta and spinach with a cream sauce that must taste as good as it looks.

Don't forget that home cooking is also an option with your Los Alamitos luxury RV rental. There are plenty of grocery stores on hand, and as good as the restaurants are in Los Alamitos, preparing a meal yourself can be just as rewarding at the end of a perfect day.
