Not far from the city of Merced lies the small town of Le Grand, California. Le Grand was first established in 1896 with the building of a local post office and named for William Le Grand Dickenson who helped facilitate the appropriation of land for the railroad to pass through town.

Le Grand is essentially a suburb of Merced and most of the people who call it home commute elsewhere for work. Le Grand is not the most lively or exciting place but could serve as an ideal place to rent an RV due to its location. When you book an RV in Le Grand, you can travel south to Fresno, north to Sacramento, west to the San Francisco Bay area, or east into the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains where much of the state’s wilderness is concentrated.

Outdoors Adventures

The town might not be the exciting destination you might hope for when you book a camper rental in Le Grand, but that hardly seems to matter for most people. The best reason for visiting Le Grand is its proximity to the mountains of eastern California, along with many other parks and lakeside recreation areas. Eastman Lake Recreation Area is about a 30-minute drive outside of Le Grand and the first of many places you will be able to enjoy with your Le Grand camper rental. The recreation area features a lovely lake surrounded by rolling hills of tall grass. The lake is a designated Trophy Bass Fishery, so many of the visitors to the recreation area are there to catch some large freshwater fish. You can utilize the hiking trails circling the lake, go boating, swim in the refreshing water, or camp out at the Codorniz Recreation Area Campground in your Le Grand RV rental by owner. Hensley Lake Recreation Area is another similar place to camp out, with a peaceful lake and ample space to roam around. You can boat, kayak, canoe, go fishing, or swim in Hensley Lake, and stay the night at the campground beside the water’s edge.

Considering the favorable location of Le Grand in California, it would be wise to check out one of the many national parks in the state. Kings Canyon National Park is about a two-hour drive away and is known for its exquisite scenery and spectacular mountain valleys. The iconic canyon from which the park takes its name was carved by glaciers millions of years ago, and there are many waterfalls and mountains that you can hike within the serene wilderness of eastern California. Kings Canyon even has some of the largest trees on the planet, like the General Grant Tree that rises over 250 feet above the ground. Yosemite National Park is even closer to Le Grand, and a fabulous park to check out when you rent an RV. This famous park attracts over four and a half million people each year to see its glorious landscapes firsthand. Rock climbing, hiking, swimming, biking, and camping are the most commonly enjoyed activities at this incredible national park.

RV Parks to Visit

When you pick up your Le Grand RV rental, you will probably need to find some places to park it overnight. The Lakes RV & Golf Resort is a place to consider, with complimentary rounds of golf when you stay overnight at the park. There is a clubhouse, a pool, a spa, and more.

Castle Air Museum in Merced is an aviation museum with its own RV park. Renting a campsite at this institution gives you easy access to this informative and interesting display of aircraft. Eastman Lake Recreation Area and any of the national parks and forests east of town are suitable places to camp overnight, with lovely views of nature. Spending some time relaxing in a campground in the mountains while reconnecting with nature could be a wonderful way to enjoy the travel trailer rental from Le Grand.

City Sightseeing

Le Grand is not the liveliest place and there aren’t many shops or restaurants to see when you rent an RV here. You do have the option of heading to Merced which happens to be just a 10-minute drive away. The most noteworthy attraction in Merced is the Merced County Courthouse Museum. This wonderful historical resource accurately and adequately depicts the county’s illustrious past. The courthouse is one of the oldest buildings in the entire state of California and can be found on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you or your family love animals, the Applegate Park Zoo is a fantastic place to visit, particularly for small children. One hundred percent of the zoo’s animals are rescued and rehabilitated which makes it different than most larger zoos.

Both Merced Theatre and Playhouse Merced host a bevy of live shows, including artsy theatrical performances, concerts, musicals, and more. Merced Theatre has an especially commanding presence as the building itself is both beautiful and antiquated.
