The community of Lake Hughes is found on the periphery of Lancaster, California, between the cities of Bakersfield and Los Angeles. Lake Hughes is found within the confines of the Angeles National Forest. The tiny village was first settled after the dawning of the great gold rush in the middle of the 19th century, which would bring waves of migrants all the way across the community in search of prosperity. This area served as a homesteading hub because of its large reserve of freshwater.
Lake Hughes is named for the lake it centers on, which offers residents and visitors a viable place to swim, fish, boat, and enjoy the favorable climate of Southern California. Lake Hughes is dotted with pleasant cabins and cottages, with few full-time residents. This quaint community is one of recreation and relaxation and is a fantastic place to get away from the hectic city on weekends or holidays. With Los Angeles nearby, and too many parks and forests to name, you can book an RV in Lake Hughes and enjoy one of the area’s best-kept secrets.
The town’s main attractions are certainly Lake Elizabeth and Hughes Lake. It is no secret that this community relies on these wonderful lakes for its recreation and tourism. Both of these lakes have exceptional recreation opportunities and places to camp in your Lake Hughes RV rental by owner. Interestingly enough, Lake Hughes is located within Angeles National Forest, a large swath of land featuring a few mountain ranges that overlook the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
You can also visit Los Padres National Forest when you rent an RV in Lake Hughes, and it is adjacent to town and quite easy to reach. The two-million-acre forest stretches from Monterrey on the Big Sur Coast all the way down to the Los Angeles area, with varying ecosystems and several mountain ranges. The Ventana Wilderness area at Los Padres is an incredible backcountry paradise with majestic waterfalls like the Salmon Creek Falls; the wilderness is also home to the mighty California condor, one of the largest birds on Earth. Hikers are in luck as there are over 300 miles of hiking trails at Los Padres and 11 different campgrounds where you can stay with your Lake Hughes camper rental.
Point Mugu State Park is a bit of a far drive in your Lake Hughes motorhome rental but well worth a drive if you envision yourself sitting on the pristine beaches of Southern California. Rocky canyons and splendid mountains cover the area at the park and guests love to hike throughout the park to see a variety of different landscapes. The coastline is full of interesting ocean life and incredible views of the sunset. You can even camp at this beautiful nature retreat to stay close to the refreshing water and epic surfing waves.
There are lots of national parks in Southern California worth seeing that would take ages to describe. Sequoia National Park to the north is probably the closest to Lake Hughes and a fantastic place to spend your Lake Hughes camper rental vacation. The mighty sequoia trees are some of the most gigantic living organisms on the planet and certainly the tallest. A large chunk of the park consists of old growth forest, with trees that are thousands of years old. Hiking and camping are welcomed and encouraged at this wilderness mecca.
When you rent an RV in Lake Hughes, you are in luck; there are many places to camp nearby so it's a matter of personal preference where you choose to settle down. Hughes Lake Shore Park is in town and is a place to park alongside the lake. The park is not known for luxury or amenities but is more than a viable option that is easy to find.
Castaic Lake State Recreation Area is south of town, and as you may have guessed, found along the edges of Castaic Lake. This is yet another fun lakeside park with ample space to camp. Castaic Lake RV Park is minutes from the lake too and has more amenities you might enjoy, like a playground for children, a nice pool, and a convenience store for your shopping needs. Acton/Los Angeles North KOA is another place to park near the city and has its own pool, dog park, and pavilion for guests.
Lake Hughes is hardly a place you would visit to enjoy a night on the town. In fact, there aren’t many attractions or places to eat as it is a small community consisting of cottages. If you love animals, there are two amazing facilities you can visit. The Quail Run Ranch is a fun ostrich farm where guests can interact with the strange creatures and feed them too. Shadowlands Foundation is the other animal facility in town but acts as more of a rehabilitation sanctuary rather than a zoo. This amazing organization rehabilitates and protects wolves, and is run by passionate people who want to educate people about the importance of these noble creatures.
In nearby Lancaster, you can see some other cool attractions, like the Antelope Valley Indian Museum. This small museum is informative and educational with lots of fascinating artifacts on display. A wealth of informative exhibits is somehow packed into the small space making it all the more impressive. The Museum of Art & History, or MOAH, is a place of high culture in the middle of the desert. This lovely facility houses lots of art from both local and far away artists in a brilliantly laid out gallery.
