The small town of Hughson lies just a short distance to the southeast of one of Central California’s major cities, Modesto. Hughson was formed back in the 19th century by Hiram Hughson and for much of its history, the town was known for its expansive peach orchards that earned it the nickname of the “Peach Capital of the World”. Today the peach orchards have shrunk significantly and the primary crop is the almond tree. Hughson and the Modesto area were also brought to the attention of the American public through George Lucas’s film, American Graffiti, which highlighted the “cruising” lifestyle of fast cars and rock & roll music in the 1950s. That’s all the more reason to book an RV in Hughson and experience the adventure of the open road here.

If you’re thinking about visiting the San Francisco Bay Area, which is a reasonable day trip, consider taking public transportation as traffic and parking can be quite a challenge. It takes a bit longer than driving, but it’s relatively painless and you’ll save precious time not driving around looking for a spot for your Hughson RV rental.

The Great Outdoors

Getting out to enjoy nature is not difficult as both the ocean and the towering Sierra Nevada range is within close driving distance when you get a travel trailer rental in Hughson. Yosemite National Park isn’t too far away and provides one of the premier outdoor experiences in North America. There are dozens of trails to hike, from treks lasting less than an hour along flat terrain to those taking multiple days and traversing expert-only terrain. There’s also the iconic Half Dome, which is well worth climbing if you can get a spot in line – due to its relative ease, it’s one of the most popular climbs in the country.

On the other side, you have the Pacific Ocean and the beaches of Monterey available for day trips. If you’re someone that loves to surf, the sands at nearby Big Sur will be calling your name. Be sure to incorporate driving at least some of the Pacific Coast Highway into your Hughson motorhome rental vacation too.

For something closer to home, hit up Fox Grove Park just outside of Hughson. It’s right on the Tuolumne River and has some great spots for picnicking. There’s also a wildlife care center inside the park that focuses on rehabilitating injured animals and releasing them back into their home environments.

RV Parks near Hughson

There aren’t too many parks in town by when you choose an RV rental in Hughson. However, there are a few just a short drive away. One of the closest places to camp, when you rent an RV, is at the Merced River RV Resort; Merced isn’t too far away and is considerably bigger than Hughson. The park offers full hookups, laundry facilities, and a swimming pool. Another option is the Kit Fox RV Park near Patterson. It’s a smaller park but still has full hookups, showers, and toilets. If you’re thinking about spending more time in Modesto or Stockton to the north of it, you might consider staying at French Camp RV Park in Manteca, which is halfway between the two larger cities. The park is not huge but it does have a swimming pool and spa to hang out in along with all the usual amenities like full hookups and some expansive green spaces to walk your four-legged friends.

The nearest Walmart to Hughson can be found just west of it in the town of Ceres. With manager permission, you might be able to stay here for a night or two, but don’t expect any of the amenities you’d find at the standard RV parks. Finding fuel and dump stations when you get a motorhome rental in Hughson isn’t too hard either as most of them are conveniently located along Highway 99 running to the west of Hughson through Modesto.

Exploring the Town of Hughson

With few exceptions, most of the interesting things to do in the Hughson area are located in nearby Modesto. One of the exceptions to this is the Hughson Historical Society and Museum, which features loads of interesting artifacts from the town’s history curated in such a way as to tell the story of how one young man came to purchase the land that Hughson now sits on. It’s a fascinating tale loaded with tidbits of information about California in the late 19th century.

If you’re looking for culture when exploring the area with a camper rental near Hughson, you can’t go wrong with the art galleries in Modesto. While not as famous as the Bay Area or Southern California’s, the artisans featured there highlight the agricultural roots of the region and how the downturn in family farms over the past several decades has changed the surrounding communities. To catch a great independent flick or film festival, visit the State Theatre in downtown Modesto. They always have interesting events going on, so just check their schedule to see what’s being offered during your vacation.
