Hickman is a small agricultural town located south of the banks of the Tuolumne River, one and a half miles from the city of Waterford in Central California. Being so close to the river and blessed with fertile lands, Hickman naturally grew into a ranching and farming area. It also became a shipping point for grains and livestock, particularly cattle and wheat. Hickman was named after a former merchant and mayor of Stockton, Louis M. Hickman, who relocated to Hickman in the 1860s after taking the hand of a local lady, Mary Dallas.

This area sits in the shadow of majestic Yosemite National Park and Stanislaus National Forest. There’s no shortage of recreational activities when you pick up a travel trailer rental in Hickman. In fact, you’ll be in the perfect location to discover the highlights of Stanislaus County. Hickman is well connected to the metropolitan city of Modesto via Highway 132 and is located within proximity of Highways 140, 120, and 99.

Discover Hickman

The Great Outdoors

East of Hickman is the Yosemite National Park, accessible via Highway 120. Best known for its breathtaking valleys and waterfalls, the Yosemite National Park offers a wide variety of recreational activities for visitors of all ages and fitness levels. Those who rent an RV in Hickman between spring and autumn can take advantage of the park's 39-mile scenic byway which passes the Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Pass or start exploring on the hundreds of miles of multi-use trails. If you choose to rent a motorhome in Hickman during the winter season, mid-December to mid-March, then remember to pack your thermals and head to the Crane Flat area of the park. This area is set up with marked cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes, plus it hosts a tubing and sledding snow play area for the little ones.

The Tuolumne Meadows is a fantastic starting point for hikes in Yosemite National Park. The area is accessible via the Tioga Road from late-May to October/November and there are multiple trails of varying difficulty leading to gorgeous alpine lakes backed by snow-capped peaks. One of the most strenuous hikes begins at the Dog Lake Parking Area and climbs 1,400 feet, first to the Tuolumne Pass and then to Vogelsang High Sierra Camp. Hikers then have the option of climbing another 280 feet to Vogelsang Lake or 600 feet to Vogelsang Pass. Alternatively, hop onto less challenging trails on the Cathedral Lakes, Gaylor Lakes, or Mono Pass.

When you’ve finished exploring the Yosemite National Park, you can take your road trip north into the Stanislaus National Forest. Comprised of nearly 900,000 acres of rugged mountainous terrain, there are more than a few highlights hidden within these woodlands. The national forest is most popular with hikers, however, many miles of trails are also suitable for mountain biking, horseback riding, and ATVs. Anyone looking for an adventure can prep their backpack and hike the primitive trails to Bourland Meadow and Box Springs in the Emigrants Wilderness Area. Alternatively, grab a paddle and canoe on alpine lakes or raft along the Tuolumne River. There are even basic campsites in Stanislaus National Forest so you can park your RV rental near Hickman.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Stanislaus County, you’ll need to find a safe place to park for the night. There are plenty of RV parks within a half an hour's drive of Hickman. Two Rivers RV Park in Manteca is one of the options; it’s located west of Hickman on Highway 132. The park offers relaxed riverside sites just a short drive from Modesto, with access to recreational water sports such as kayaking and boating on the Stanislaus and San Joaquin Rivers.

Another option is to take your luxury RV rental in Hickman east to the Turlock Lake State Park which provides tranquil RV campsites in the eastern reaches of Stanislaus County. You could even drive south on Highway 99 to the Castle Air Museum RV Park in Atwater for a unique camping experience within a historic airport. The small park has limited RV sites; however, each site is equipped with full hookups, including water and sewer, and Wi-Fi.

If you plan to visit the Tuolumne Meadows or Yosemite Valley areas of Yosemite National Park then you might like to park your Hickman RV rental in one of the national park’s campgrounds. There are a handful of rustic campgrounds without electrical hookups in Yosemite Village, including the Upper and Lower Pines Campground, and the North Pines Campground. These are located within walking distance of several trailheads as well as the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center. Alternatively, you can follow the Tioga Road, Highway 120, to Tuolumne Meadows Campground for direct access to Tuolumne Meadows hiking trails.

Hickman may be small but it’s still worth setting aside a day of your vacation to visit the town and its surrounding area. The quiet town hosts a school, community church, and post office. Visitors can also shop for plants at the local nursery or pay a visit to one of the nearby farms.
