Fairfax is a small town in Northern California, just 20 miles north of San Francisco. Booking an RV in Marin County is a great way to explore the area. Nearby, you’ll find several parks, including Point Reyes National Seashore, Mt Tamalpais State Park and the Muir Woods National Monument. The town sits in an area of forested hills and valleys, offering excellent hiking and cycling trails while also being close to San Francisco Bay and the Pacific coast. Don’t forget the world-famous Napa Valley wine area is just to the east and Sonoma County Wine Area just to the north. Perfect!

Fairfax is named after Lord Charles Fairfax and supposedly lays claim to the last public duel held in California to settle a political issue, in which sadly, one dueler perished. One unique feature of Fairfax is its location at the foot of Mt Tamalpais, which is regarded as the birthplace of mountain biking and the town is home to the Marin Museum of Bicycling.

Discover Fairfax

The Great Outdoors

Taking your Fairfax rental motorhome to Point Reyes National Seashore is a great idea. It covers an area of over 28,000 hectares and offers visitors around 150 miles of hiking trails. The Park was established in 1962 by President John F Kennedy and in 1976 President Ford designated large areas as wilderness, giving the area valuable protection. The park is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, has several visitor centers and is a great place that caters for kids. Of particular interest will be the Historic Lighthouse where you can whale watch between December and April.

A short 2.6 mile out and back hike called Cataract Trail is definitely worth a visit. It is classed as a moderate trail but is suitable for all the family with care. There is a picnic area halfway along and the route passes numerous waterfalls along the way, eventually leading to Cataract Falls.

Music lovers might want to venture into Mount Tamalpais State Park and find the Cushing Memorial Amphitheater, built in 1933. There are several hikes to and from the area, but the amphitheater is of interest as it’s widely thought to have hosted the first outdoor music festival held as part of the Summer of Love in 1967. They still use the amphitheater today and hold the annual benefit concert, Mount Tam Jam. There are now roads up to the amphitheatre, so you can drive your Fairfax camper rental to the site and stop over for the show.

San Francisco Bay is nearby of course, but just to the west of the town is Mount Tamalpais Watershed, an ecological park that also provides domestic water supplies for Marin County and beyond. Along with numerous hiking and riding trails, the area is home to mountain lions among other animals and offers fish viewing at Lake Lagunitas. Here, at the beginning of November until February, you can watch as salmon and trout return to the lake to spawn.

RV Parks

There are plenty of spots to park your RV rental in the Fairfax area and one of the most popular is Marin Park in Greenbrae, just 5 miles south of Fairfax. Along with the usual facilities, the site also offers a swimming pool, 24/7 staff, free WiFi, and it’s pet-friendly. It's perfectly located for exploring using your Fairfax luxury motorhome rental, but also close to San Francisco for the big city night out! They are very helpful and can give you endless useful information about the area.

Heading north you’ll find another great stopover at Novato RV Park. It offers full rig hook-ups for your motorhome rental in Fairfax with up 50 amp electrical connections for all your power needs. There is an onsite deli and store plus free WiFi and a swimming pool. All pets are welcome, so if you’re traveling with your pooch, they’ll be fine here.

Getting close to nature, the Samuel P. Taylor State Park offers campsites beneath the mighty redwoods suitable for smaller trailers and camper vans. The site is basic, with no electrical hookup but you get easy access to great trails in the area and very close to the wildlife in the park.

Exploring the City

Fairfax is a small town, with an old town feel. It’s been described as “very walkable”, which is about perfect if you are used to big, busy cities, so it’s a great place to park-up your Fairfax camper rental. It is home to the Marin Museum of Bicycling which opened in 2015. The museum takes you on a journey exploring the history of cycling from the 1860s to the modern day. Along with a shop for the usual gifts, they run events, hold film shows and provide a meeting place for cycling clubs.

Nearby San Anselmo, less than 2 miles away, has become known as the Northern California Antique Capital, with a 130 strong association of dealers. In the downtown area you’ll find not just antique stores, but galleries and even a winery. Sounds like the perfect spot for exploring and finding a locally made gift to remember the visit.

You not spoilt for choice in Fairfax when it comes to eating out, despite its small size. There is a good selection of bars that can fix you up a quick snack, or if you are looking for something ethnic, you’ll find sushi, Mexican, Italian, Asian and much more. Staying on the food theme, make a point to visit the Fairfax Farmers Market while in the area. Fresh, delicious food from the local community.
